The global software-as-a-service (SaaS) community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected leaders. Samir Bodas, cofounder of enterprise SaaS unicorn Icertis, passed away at the age of 61 after a prolonged battle with cancer. The company confirmed the news on Thursday, describing his passing as a profound loss not just for Icertis, but for the wider technology ecosystem he helped shape over decades.

In an official statement, Icertis said, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Samir Bodas, our cofounder, long-time Chief Executive Officer, and Executive Chairman, following a courageous battle with cancer. This is a loss felt by many, and our thoughts are with Samir’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him personally.”

From Pune to the Global Tech Stage

Born in Pune, Samir Bodas’ journey was defined by an early fascination with technology and problem-solving. In 1982, he moved to the United States to pursue computer science at the University of Texas at Austin, a decision that would set the stage for his global career. He later strengthened his business leadership skills at the Wharton School, blending technical depth with strategic thinking—an uncommon combination that would become central to his success as a founder.

This dual grounding in engineering and business gave Bodas a unique lens to spot inefficiencies in large enterprises and imagine how software could solve them at scale.

A Career Built Across Iconic Tech Companies

Before founding Icertis, Bodas built an impressive career across several well-known technology firms. He held leadership roles at National Instruments and Microsoft, gaining deep exposure to enterprise software and global operations. He later worked with startups such as iMandi, Jamcracker, and Aztecsoft, experiences that sharpened his entrepreneurial instincts and taught him how to scale companies across geographies.

Each role added a layer to his understanding of how technology, customers, and business strategy intersect—knowledge that would prove invaluable when he embarked on his most defining venture.

Building Icertis: A Vision for Enterprise Contracts

In 2009, Samir Bodas co-founded Icertis with Monish Darda, driven by a bold vision: to transform how enterprises manage contracts, one of the most complex and risk-prone aspects of business operations. At the time, contract management was largely manual, fragmented, and overlooked. Bodas saw an opportunity to turn it into a strategic function powered by software and data.

Under his leadership, Icertis developed Icertis Contract Management (ICM), an AI-powered platform that helps enterprises manage sell-side, buy-side, and corporate contracts at scale. What began as a niche solution grew into a mission-critical system for the world’s largest organizations.

Today, Icertis serves more than one-third of Fortune 100 companies across sectors such as financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail—an extraordinary feat for a company founded by Indian entrepreneurs with global ambitions.

Scaling Into a Global SaaS Unicorn

Icertis’ growth mirrored the rise of Indian-founded global SaaS companies over the past decade. The company entered the unicorn club in 2019 and was last valued at $5 billion during its 2022 funding round. To date, it has raised over $560 million from investors including Greycroft, PremjiInvest, B Capital Group, Meritech Capital Partners, and SAP.

But for Bodas, scale was never just about valuation. Colleagues often recall his emphasis on building a “consequential and enduring company” rather than chasing short-term wins. That philosophy helped Icertis earn long-term enterprise trust and establish itself as a category leader in contract lifecycle management (CLM).

A Leader, Mentor, and Builder of People

Beyond metrics and milestones, Samir Bodas’ most lasting legacy may be the leaders he mentored and the culture he built. Monish Darda, his cofounder, summed it up best: “He challenged all of us to think bigger, act with integrity, and create a consequential and enduring company. The company we are today is a testament to his vision, and his influence will never be forgotten.”

Within the startup ecosystem, Bodas was known for quietly guiding younger founders, sharing lessons from his own journey, and demonstrating that Indian entrepreneurs could build globally dominant SaaS companies from day one.

A Moment of Reflection for India’s Startup Ecosystem

Bodas’ passing comes during a period of deep reflection for the Indian startup community. Over the past year, the ecosystem has lost several respected founders, including We Founder Circle’s Neeraj Tyagi, Table Space’s Amit Banerji, and Epigamia cofounder Rohan Mirchandani. These losses serve as a reminder of the human stories behind India’s technology success.

Samir Bodas leaves behind more than a unicorn. He leaves a blueprint for building global companies with integrity, patience, and purpose—a legacy that will continue to inspire founders for years to come.
