Saudi billionaire Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud has increased his bet on Lucid Motors, acquiring a 5% stake in the luxury electric vehicle manufacturer at a time when the company is working through one of the most challenging periods in its history.
The investment, disclosed in a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), comes just weeks after speculation surrounding Lucid’s financial future sent its shares tumbling. Instead of stepping away, the Saudi royal chose to invest, signaling confidence in the company’s long-term prospects despite mounting pressure in the competitive EV market.
A Timely Investment During Market Uncertainty
According to the SEC filing, Prince Al Waleed purchased more than 19 million Lucid shares through his investment office. The purchase was made when the company’s market capitalization had fallen below $2 billion, a level that reflected growing investor concerns.
The timing is significant.
On July 14, reports circulated suggesting Lucid could either explore bankruptcy protection or be taken private by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Those claims triggered fresh uncertainty around the automaker. Lucid quickly rejected the speculation, insisting the reports were inaccurate, and its share price has since recovered.
Rather than viewing the downturn as a warning sign, Prince Al Waleed appears to have treated it as an investment opportunity.
Saudi Arabia Deepens Its Commitment to Lucid
The latest purchase further strengthens Saudi Arabia’s influence over Lucid Motors.
The Public Investment Fund has been Lucid’s largest financial supporter since 2018, when it made its first major investment in the California-based EV manufacturer. Following Lucid’s public listing through a SPAC merger in 2021, the sovereign wealth fund became the majority shareholder, maintaining an ownership stake of roughly 60%.
Over the years, the PIF has repeatedly injected fresh capital into the company, purchasing additional shares and extending financial support as Lucid expanded production and launched new vehicle programs.
Prince Al Waleed’s personal investment adds another layer of Saudi backing beyond the government’s existing ownership, highlighting continued confidence from influential investors within the Kingdom.
Lucid Continues a Major Business Reset
The investment also arrives during a period of significant restructuring at Lucid.
Earlier this year, the company appointed Silvio Napoli as its new Chief Executive Officer, tasking him with improving efficiency and reducing costs.
In June, Lucid announced an 18% workforce reduction as part of a broader plan to simplify operations. The layoffs followed another round of job cuts earlier in the year, reflecting the difficult environment facing many electric vehicle manufacturers.
Like several EV startups, Lucid has struggled to scale production while navigating slower-than-expected consumer demand, rising operating costs, and increasing competition from both established automakers and emerging Chinese brands.
The restructuring is aimed at improving operational discipline while positioning the company for sustainable growth over the coming years.
A Familiar Name in Global Technology Investing
Prince Al Waleed bin Talal is no stranger to high-profile technology investments.
Often referred to as the “Arabian Warren Buffett,” he has built a global investment portfolio spanning technology, media, hospitality, and financial services.
His investment firm has previously held significant positions in Twitter before Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform. He also maintains investments in companies such as Snap and music streaming platform Deezer, reinforcing his reputation as one of the Middle East’s most influential global investors.
His latest move into Lucid reflects a strategy of investing in companies that possess long-term growth potential despite short-term market volatility.
A Vote of Confidence for Lucid’s Future
While Lucid still faces considerable challenges in achieving profitability and expanding its customer base, Prince Al Waleed’s investment sends a positive message to the market.
The purchase suggests that influential investors continue to see value in Lucid’s technology, premium vehicle lineup, and future growth potential, even as the broader EV industry undergoes a period of correction.
For Lucid, the additional backing comes at an important moment. As the company streamlines operations, launches new products, and competes in an increasingly crowded electric vehicle market, sustained confidence from Saudi investors could provide both financial stability and reassurance to shareholders.
Whether this renewed optimism translates into stronger business performance remains to be seen, but the latest investment underscores one clear message: some of Lucid’s biggest supporters are continuing to back the company for the long haul.
