Shifting Payloads Cause Tailgate Warping Issues in Tesla Cybertrucks

The highly anticipated Tesla Cybertruck, known for its bold design and innovative features, is facing a new challenge: warping tailgates. Multiple owners have reported that the truck’s signature stainless steel tailgate is bending or warping under the weight of heavy loads.

The issue seems to be exacerbated by shifting payloads. When cargo moves within the truck bed, it can exert uneven pressure on the tailgate, causing it to deform over time. This problem has been documented in various online forums and social media platforms, with owners sharing images of the warped tailgates.

While Tesla has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter, the growing number of complaints suggests a potential design flaw or manufacturing issue. The Cybertruck’s unique tailgate design, which incorporates a large, flat surface and a heavy-duty latch system, may be contributing to the problem.

Concerns Mount Over Cybertruck’s Tailgate Durability, Potential for Class-Action Lawsuit Looms

Some owners have speculated that the stainless steel used for the tailgate, while incredibly strong in tension, may not be as resilient to bending forces. Additionally, the lack of reinforcement around the tailgate edges could be exacerbating the issue.

The warping tailgates have raised concerns among Cybertruck owners about the truck’s overall durability and Tesla’s quality control. Many have expressed disappointment that a vehicle touted for its ruggedness and utility is experiencing such a significant problem.

As the Cybertruck gains wider adoption, it is likely that more cases of tailgate warping will come to light. This could potentially lead to a class-action lawsuit if enough owners are affected.

Tesla has a history of addressing vehicle issues through over-the-air software updates. However, it remains to be seen if a software solution can effectively mitigate the tailgate warping problem. Physical modifications, such as reinforcing the tailgate or redesigning its structure, may be necessary to resolve the issue permanently.

Cybertruck Owners Report Tailgate Warping Issues, Highlighting Practical Challenges of Tesla’s Bold Design

The Cybertruck Foundation Series’ tailgate has a very apparent bent, according to user-posted pictures. It certainly isn’t a good appearance. He stated the following as the cause of the harm:

Boards were as far in bed as possible until the truck accelerated faster than should (using traffic aware cruise). I should have been driving manually very carefully which I did the rest of the way. However, I’m pretty sure when it lurched forward it shifted the load. Note to use chill mode IF using TACC probably would be ok. And yes I’m sure a new tailgate is not cheap…

Tailgate was down and agree the bendy composite boards sliding further out was definitely contributory.

The Cybertruck’s unique design has always been a double-edged sword. While it has garnered a cult-like following, it has also attracted criticism for its unconventional aesthetics and potential practical limitations. The tailgate warping issue adds another layer of complexity to the truck’s reputation.

Tesla has yet to provide a timeline for addressing the tailgate problem. Owners affected by the issue are advised to document the damage and contact Tesla customer support for assistance.
