A story of resilience and redemption, Simon Sio’s journey from being a child ejected from a luxury hotel to its eventual owner captures a full-circle moment. Now a successful real estate mogul and founder of the Lek Hang Group, Sio took over the Hotel Central in Macao and revitalized its former glory, transforming it into a destination that honors both heritage and modernity. This isn’t just a story of success; it’s a testament to his dedication to preserving the cultural legacy of Macao.

A Childhood Encounter Sparks a Lifelong Goal

Sio’s journey with Hotel Central began during his childhood. On a visit, he was denied entry and asked to leave. This experience, instead of deterring him, inspired him to one day return—not as a visitor, but as the owner. Sio made a promise to himself: he would buy the hotel in the future. Little did he know, this moment of childhood ambition would ultimately fuel his path into the real estate world and spark a lifelong vision.

In 1991, he established the Lek Hang Group, a real estate company that has grown into a major player in Macao’s property market. With persistence and a drive to fulfill his childhood promise, Sio’s dream finally began to take shape in the early 2000s when he took ownership of the hotel and embarked on a decade-long journey to restore it.

Reviving Macao’s Historic Gem: The Hotel Central

Originally established in 1928, the Hotel Central (formerly known as the President Hotel) was one of Macao’s premier establishments, renowned for its luxury and appeal. However, by the 1960s, it had lost its sparkle, succumbing to age and neglect as newer, glitzier establishments began to take the spotlight. When Sio acquired it, he wasn’t just investing in property; he was taking on a piece of Macao’s history.

He recalled, “The giant watched me grow up like an elder. So I had a deep emotional attachment to it. At its peak, it was my idol. As I became older, its decay made my heart uncomfortable.” This sense of personal connection inspired him to restore the hotel not merely as a business endeavor but as a project of cultural and historical importance.

Overcoming Obstacles: A Long and Costly Renovation

Restoring a historic property presented a unique set of challenges. Following a lengthy seven-year acquisition process that concluded in 2016, Sio faced the monumental task of bringing the hotel back to life. The restoration of the Hotel Central demanded an enormous financial investment—approximately Rs 2,310 crore—but for Sio, the commitment went beyond financial gains. His philosophy was rooted in a saying that deeply influenced him: “Money can produce volume, but money cannot reproduce history.”

Sio’s commitment to preserving the hotel’s legacy led to painstaking efforts to maintain its original architectural essence while incorporating modern amenities. Today, the renovated hotel boasts 114 rooms designed in a retro style and features a unique “Historical Cultural Corridor” that immerses visitors in the building’s storied past. Additionally, Sio’s future plans for the hotel include a rooftop bar and shopping center, further enhancing its appeal while preserving its unique cultural character.

A Vision for Macao Beyond Casinos

Sio’s ambition to restore Hotel Central goes beyond personal achievement; he views it as part of a broader mission to reshape Macao’s tourism identity. In recent decades, Macao’s tourism industry has been largely synonymous with its sprawling casino resorts, drawing visitors from around the world. However, Sio envisions a future where Macao can stand out as a cultural and historical destination rather than just a gaming hub.

He expressed his vision by saying, “Macao is small. We can’t grow in size. Thirty-three square kilometers is all we have…But small things can be exquisite. So we need to move in the direction of exquisiteness, like a jewel.” By restoring Hotel Central to its former grandeur, Sio aims to offer visitors an experience that combines luxury with cultural significance, presenting Macao as a city with a rich heritage to share.

In a world where modernity often overshadows history, Sio’s dedication to preserving Hotel Central stands out as a reminder of the importance of legacy. His efforts not only resurrect a landmark from Macao’s past but also serve as an inspiration for others to invest in projects that celebrate heritage. He sees the hotel as more than a business asset; it is a cultural jewel that he hopes will inspire others to enhance the city’s unique character.

The reopening of Hotel Central represents the fruition of a childhood vow made in innocence but fulfilled with purpose. Simon Sio has transformed what was once a personal ambition into a public treasure. For him, restoring the hotel is not just about revitalizing a building—it’s about breathing life into a piece of history and sharing it with future generations. Sio’s journey from an ejected child to the owner of the prestigious hotel serves as a powerful testament to determination, respect for history, and the impact of dreams that are pursued with passion.
