According to Roberts, releasing Squadron 42 near Grand Theft Auto 6 would put the game in an extremely difficult position when it comes to media attention.

Star Citizen Spinoff Squadron 42 Delayed to 2027, Developer Says GTA 6 Is to Blame

After more than a decade in development, Squadron 42, the long-awaited single-player spinoff of Star Citizen, has been delayed once again. Cloud Imperium Games has moved the game’s release from late 2026 to the second quarter of 2027, with studio founder and game director Chris Roberts saying the decision was largely made to avoid being overshadowed by Rockstar Games’ massive upcoming release, Grand Theft Auto 6.

The announcement marks another delay for a project that has been in development since 2014. The game had most recently been expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, following years of changing release plans and development milestones.

This time, however, Cloud Imperium Games says the additional wait is not simply about needing more development time. Instead, the studio wants to avoid launching its ambitious single-player space adventure anywhere near GTA 6, which is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026.

GTA 6 Could Dominate Gaming Coverage

According to Roberts, releasing Squadron 42 near Grand Theft Auto 6 would put the game in an extremely difficult position when it comes to media attention.

Rockstar’s next open-world crime game is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment launches in years. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5, remains one of the most commercially successful video games ever released, while anticipation for the sequel has reached an extraordinary level.

Squadron 42, Star Citizen Spinoff, Delayed To 2027 Because Of Grand Theft Auto VI

Roberts believes that the amount of coverage surrounding GTA 6 could overwhelm other major releases arriving at the same time.

The developer’s concern is not limited to direct competition for sales. Gaming websites, YouTubers, streamers, social media creators and audiences are expected to devote enormous amounts of attention to GTA 6 when it launches.

That could leave little room for another large-scale game to receive the publicity Cloud Imperium believes Squadron 42deserves.

The studio has therefore decided that the second quarter of 2027 would provide a more favourable launch window.

A 12-Year Development Journey

Squadron 42 was first announced as part of the broader Star Citizen project and was originally planned for release much earlier in the game’s development.

Over the years, the project has undergone significant changes in scope and technology. What began as a component of Star Citizen eventually developed into a standalone single-player campaign with its own large cast, cinematic sequences and extensive gameplay systems.

The game is being directed by Chris Roberts, the creator of the Wing Commander franchise. Cloud Imperium describes Squadron 42 as a spiritual successor to that series.

Players will take on the role of a military recruit serving in the United Empire of Earth Navy. The campaign combines space combat with first-person gameplay, exploration, character interactions and cinematic storytelling.

The game’s Hollywood-style presentation is one of its biggest selling points.

Its cast includes major actors such as Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, Henry Cavill and Andy Serkis. Their involvement has helped Cloud Imperium position Squadron 42 as a cinematic science-fiction adventure rather than simply another space simulator.

The Game Was Supposed to Arrive in 2026

The latest delay is particularly notable because Cloud Imperium had previously presented 2026 as a firm target.

At CitizenCon 2024, the company showed an extended gameplay presentation and confirmed that Squadron 42 was targeting a 2026 release.

The studio subsequently continued development and polishing, giving fans hope that the game might finally be approaching the end of its unusually long production.

Cloud Imperium has maintained that the project has made substantial progress and that the majority of its major systems are in place.

However, the game’s history has made players cautious about release announcements.

Earlier versions of Squadron 42 were associated with multiple planned release windows that ultimately passed without the game launching. The project has therefore become one of the most closely watched examples of prolonged game development in the industry.

The move to 2027 means the game will have spent roughly 13 years in development by the time it reaches its new target window.

An Exact Release Date Is Still Missing

Cloud Imperium has not announced a specific launch date within the second quarter of 2027.

The company has, however, planned a preview event in October 2026 that will allow a limited number of original backers and long-time Star Citizen content creators to play the game.

That event could provide a much clearer indication of how close Squadron 42 is to completion.

Roberts has indicated that more information about the launch will be shared following those sessions, including the specific release date.

For fans who have followed the project since its earliest days, the October event could therefore become an important milestone.

Not Everyone Is Convinced

While Cloud Imperium’s explanation has been straightforward, the announcement has inevitably sparked skepticism among parts of the Star Citizen community.

The game’s long development history means that some players remain unconvinced whenever a new release window is announced.

Critics argue that the presence of GTA 6 does not necessarily explain why Squadron 42 cannot launch in late 2026, particularly because Rockstar’s game is initially being released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S rather than PC.

Cloud Imperium, however, is focusing on the broader impact of GTA 6. Even without a PC release, Rockstar’s game is expected to dominate gaming news, online discussions and creator content across platforms.

From that perspective, the company appears to be treating GTA 6 as an industry-wide media event rather than simply a competing product.

A Strategic Delay or Another Setback?

The decision ultimately represents a gamble.

Waiting until 2027 could give Squadron 42 a clearer window in which to attract players and media attention. A major launch without GTA 6 dominating headlines could allow Cloud Imperium to highlight the game’s graphics, story, cast and gameplay more effectively.

But another delay also risks frustrating an audience that has already waited years.

For now, Cloud Imperium is standing by its explanation: Squadron 42 is being pushed to the second quarter of 2027 because the studio does not want its 12-year development effort buried beneath the enormous attention expected to accompany Grand Theft Auto 6.

After years of waiting, players will have to wait a little longer to answer the call.
