Even doctors had given up on him saying, “You only have two years more”, when he was just 21 years old. But, he went on living and redefining time and space. He battled the disease for over 5 decades. This man is none other than the famous, Stephen Hawking.
Let’s go back in time where he redefined it and get a brief history of his time.
- Stephen Hawking was born on the 300th death anniversary of Galileo, on 8th January 1942.
- Young Stephen was an average student at the school. Or Rather, he was a late bloomer as he could read properly only after the age of 8.
- Hawking’s father was a Medical Research and he wanted Stephen to follow his path. But unlike his father, Stephen found Biology
“too inexact, too descriptive”. He preferred Mathematics over it. This was the reason he selected Quantum Physics.
- “Your marks don’t define your intelligence” is perhaps the best way to define his childhood. Even though Hawking’s grades were average, he loved to create things. This inspired his friends to call him ‘Einstein’. The nickname got pretty famous in school after he built a computer with his friends during his teenage years. Also, his deep understanding of Time and Space fascinated everyone.
- “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. But, Stephen was not your random Jack, he was selected in the Oxford Rowing Team at the age of 17, which was also the year he joined the prestigious college on full scholarship.
- The Bet on Black Hole – Stephen made a bet with a fellow scientist saying that the information which goes inside a black hole gets destroyed after its evaporation. Technically, the bet is still on but we will never find out whether the Genius was right or not.
Stephen Hawking had a great sense of Humor.
- He loved to smile and making people around him smile.
“Life would be tragic if it weren’t funny.”
- Doctors told him that he got the rare Lou Gehrig’s disease which would gradually paralyze him and all he had was two more years. But, this was not a man who would let destiny define him. No! it was the other way around.
“However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”
It was Stephen who defined his destiny when he beat all the odds and made groundbreaking discoveries that changed the perspective of the world on Time and Space.
- “The Boundless Universe is his biggest Achievement.” Out of all the major discoveries, coming up with the theory that the universe is boundless, with his partner Jim Hartle in 1983, is his greatest discovery.
- Hawking loved TV Shows. This was the reason he appeared in many of them. He appeared in the Simpsons, the Star Trek: Next Generation and the famous television series, The Big Bang Theory.
“Best Seller – The Brief History of Time”.
- After being featured in the British Sunday Times best-seller list for more than 237 weeks, ‘The Brief History of Time’ broke several records and was declared the Best Seller.
- Scientists’ gratitude to Hawking – In order to show their respect and make him happy, they arranged a zero-gravity shuttle just to lift him from his wheelchair and make him float.
- Stephen Hawking passed away on 14th May 2018, on the birthday of the famous scientist, Albert Einstein.
Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.
Many agree that Hawking didn’t die, he just figured out a way to go into some unknown dimension. I mean, if it is Stephen Hawking we are talking about, it probably can be true. Or he is probably having fun time traveling.
But, on a serious note, he really was an inspiration to everyone. An example of what a man can do, if he has a passion for something.
