Strategy Defies Critics, Buys $980M in Bitcoin as It Survives Nasdaq 100 Cut

In a week that tested the nerves of both crypto bulls and corporate governance experts, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has emerged not just intact, but more aggressive than ever. The company announced Monday that it has acquired an additional 10,645 Bitcoin for approximately $980 million, a move that pushes its total digital treasury to a staggering 671,268 coins.

This latest acquisition comes as a dual victory for the firm. Despite growing scrutiny over its business model and a looming review by global index provider MSCI, Strategy successfully retained its position in the prestigious Nasdaq 100 index during Friday’s annual reconstitution. The company’s continued inclusion signals that, for now, Wall Street’s gatekeepers are willing to tolerate the firm’s unconventional “Bitcoin standard” operational strategy.

The Billion-Dollar Buy

The acquisition, which occurred the previous week, was completed for an average acquisition cost of $92,098 each (per Coin). As evidenced by this purchase, the Company remains committed to obtaining and holding Bitcoin in the face of short-term fluctuations in the market’s value. Following this purchase, the total Value of Strategy’s holdings exceeds $60 billion based on the current valuations of Bitcoin in the marketplace. This Value far exceeds the total Cash Holdings of most of the 500 Companies in the S&P 500.This marks the second consecutive week the firm has added over 10,000 coins to its balance sheet, a pace of accumulation that suggests an attempt to “front-run” potential regulatory or market shifts in early 2026. “We are not trying to time the market,” CEO Phong Le reiterated in a recent investor call. “We are the market.”

Engineering the War Chest

Funding a nearly $1 billion purchase without dipping into operational cash flow requires complex financial engineering. According to a new SEC filing, the capital for this buy didn’t come from software sales, but from the company’s sophisticated “At-The-Market” (ATM) equity offering program.

Strategy raised the funds primarily by selling its Class A common stock (MSTR). However, the filing reveals the company is increasingly leveraging its suite of preferred stock products—specifically the STRF, STRD, and STRK series—to diversify its capital base. The various types of investment the company utilizes permit Strategy to capture a variety of capital sources including yield-hungry institutional investors and risk-tolerant retail traders while building its capital structure into an effective tool to achieve its primary function of purchasing Bitcoin.

Surviving the Nasdaq Cut

Friday’s Nasdaq 100 reconstitution was a white-knuckle moment for Strategy shareholders. The annual review, which reshuffles the index to reflect the largest non-financial companies on the exchange, saw several tech heavyweights removed, including Biogen and ON Semiconductor.

Despite concerns that Strategy’s volatility might disqualify it, the firm clung to its spot. Inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 is critical because it forces passive investment funds—like the massive Invesco QQQ Trust—to hold Strategy’s stock, creating a constant floor of buying pressure.

“The Nasdaq 100 is the varsity team,” said one market analyst.”Staying on the roster validates Strategy as a top-tier technology firm, even if its ‘technology’ is now primarily financial structuring rather than software code.”

The MSCI Sword of Damocles

Though the Nasdaq battle is finished, the fight for index inclusion is still ongoing. All attention is now directed towards MSCI, the global index provider that is now holding a consultation on classifying “digital asset treasury companies”.

MSCI has proposed excluding companies that hold more than 50% of their assets in crypto from its standard equity indices, a rule that would squarely target Strategy. A decision is expected in January 2026.If excluded, Strategy could face billions in forced selling from funds that track MSCI benchmarks. The firm’s aggressive buying this week may be a signal to MSCI that it has no intention of pivoting back to a traditional software model to appease index providers.

Sustainability Questions Persist

The sheer scale of Strategy’s holdings has reignited the debate over the sustainability of its model.Critics argue that the company is effectively a leveraged Bitcoin ETF charging a premium, exposing shareholders to extreme downside risk if the crypto market corrects sharply.

Despite the CEO’s defiance, he stated that our ability to raise billions on short notice is an indication of our strength and financial stability regardless of the liquidity issue.

The path forward for Strategy is clear: continue to acquire, remain in holding mode, and make the traditional financial system modified to meet their needs, instead of modifying them to fit within the traditional financial model.
