Tesla finally prepares to launch photos of referral program prize winners to space
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

In 2018, Tesla had a referral program where the then-current vehicle owners would share a referral code with new buyers. Then the one show shared the code will receive Supercharging credits. The program had other prizes as well, which included sending a picture into deep space. After four years, the program ended, Tesla reported last week that they will deliver the prize.

According to Tesla, the price was stated as, “Launch Your Photo into Deep Space Orbit We’ll laser-etch any image onto glass and send it into deep space orbit for millions of years. Refer more friends while you wait for an alien race to discover your payload.”

Last week, Tesla started reaching out to the winners via email, asking them to upload the photo that they want to launch into space. “Our records show that you earned the chance to launch a photo into space under a previous Tesla Referral Program. After much anticipation, we are excited to begin your photo’s journey to space. To participate, please submit your photo before June 30, 2022. Each referrer may submit one photo – choose wisely.”

It appears that Tesla is going to hitch a ride on one of SpaceX’s missions to fulfill its obligation. It is said that thousands of photos will be sent to space, as many people sent out referral codes back then. However, more details are yet to be revealed, such as is the launch date.

The referral program

Tesla owners with four qualifying referrals were also given priority access to vehicle software updates. The company ensured that after owners become eligible for this award, their vehicles automatically received software updates once available. Tesla owners who own more than one vehicle saw all of their electric cars get priority access to software updates, provided that the vehicles were associated with the same award-eligible Tesla Account.

Tesla’s $100 Supercharging Credit, the company introduced when it initially retired the Free Unlimited Supercharging program.  Then the referral program was applied to every purchase of a new Model S, Model X, or Model 3. Unlike Free Unlimited Supercharging, which only applied to the Model 3 Performance, the $100 Supercharging Credit was applied for all Model 3 purchases regardless of trim level.

Perhaps most notable, though, is “Launch Your Photo into Deep Space Orbit,” a new reward for owners with one qualifying referral. The cool, fun perk involves Tesla laser-etching any photo of the owner’s choice being sent into deep space.
