After years of speculation, tweets, and what-ifs, it’s finally happening, Tesla is coming to India. And it’s starting in style, with a brand-new showroom set to open in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15.
The invitation dropped late Thursday, and it’s official: Tesla’s “Experience Centre” in Mumbai will be the brand’s first physical presence in the country. For Indian Tesla fans and electric car enthusiasts, this is a long-awaited moment, a mix of excitement, curiosity, and cautious optimism.
A Soft Landing, Not a Full-Speed Launch
Don’t expect a fleet of Teslas zipping around Indian roads just yet. This isn’t a grand factory unveiling or a local manufacturing announcement. Instead, Tesla is dipping its toes into the Indian market, bringing in a small batch of vehicles, chargers, and accessories, all imported.
According to customs data, Tesla has brought in around $1 million worth of goods so far this year, including six Model Y SUVs (five priced at $32,500 and one long-range version at $46,000), as well as several Superchargers. All of this is likely to be showcased at the Mumbai showroom.
It’s a testing-the-waters move, and one that comes with a big price tag, thanks to India’s heavy import duties of about 70% on foreign EVs. For now, Tesla seems okay absorbing those costs, perhaps to make its brand known before going bigger.
Elon Musk’s Complicated Relationship With India
Let’s not forget: Tesla and India have had a bit of a rocky courtship. Elon Musk has often expressed interest in India but just as often aired his frustration over the country’s high import taxes. Last year, he was supposed to visit India, and many expected him to announce a multi-billion dollar investment. But, in typical Musk fashion, the trip was cancelled last minute, leaving everyone guessing.
So far, Tesla has made it clear: it’s not building a factory in India, at least, not yet. And while the Indian government has tried to woo the company with new EV-friendly policies, the two sides haven’t quite met in the middle.
The Team Is Taking Shape
That said, Tesla isn’t just showing up with cars and chargers. Over the past few months, it’s quietly been hiring in India, bringing on store managers, service execs, and sales professionals. There are also open positions for supply chain engineers and Autopilot operators, pointing to bigger plans in the future.
This isn’t just a pop-up store. It’s a strategic starting point.
More Than a Store, It’s an Experience
Tesla’s Mumbai centre is being called an “Experience Centre” for a reason. It won’t just be a place to buy cars it’ll be a space where people can see, touch, learn, and test-drive Tesla’s electric vehicles, get a feel for the Supercharger network, and experience the brand that’s redefined electric mobility around the world.
India’s EV Future Just Got More Interesting
With Tesla now officially setting up shop in India, the EV conversation in the country takes on a whole new tone. Sure, the prices won’t be wallet-friendly yet. And yes, there are still a lot of policy and infrastructure gaps to fill.
But even so, Tesla’s arrival feels like the beginning of something bigger, a quiet, cautious entry that could very well lead to a much larger journey down the road.
For now, Mumbai gets to say: Welcome to India, Tesla. We’ve been waiting.
