A grand $250 million vision to bring world-class healthcare to rural Wyoming is coming to a sudden halt. Charles Hoskinson, the billionaire creator of the Cardano cryptocurrency, is shutting down his ambitious Hoskinson Health and Wellness Clinic in Gillette. In 2023, the clinic will host its grand opening but does not anticipate actually operating until after July 31, 2026 (after which time it will cease operations). Due to the rapid growth in staffing and operations, the facility has depleted the cash reserves that were established to support its operation, leaving its dedicated medical staff and thousands of rural patients having a difficult time making the transition to another provider.
A Grand Vision Burns Through Cash
When the clinic first opened, Hoskinson boldly claimed it would become the “Mayo Clinic of the West,” bringing advanced medical technology to a region that desperately needed it. Sadly, the way of doing business was unable to support the rapid growth of the clinic’s use. The first indication of trouble started in December 2025, when construction companies working closely with the clinic, removed 136 workers after laying off 40 let go by the clinic itself. By January 2026, there would be 40 job reductions, which would finally bring management to acknowledge that the organization had grown too quickly and it was no longer financially viable to operate.
Patients and Providers Left Scrambling
A sudden halt to operations has created a huge gap in the local healthcare system for both patients and healthcare providers. The clinic had been able to provide care for about 20,000 people, a majority of whom received important health care services from the clinic. For people with serious health issues, this clinic was essential in providing them with care close to home. Many of these people now must go elsewhere, including other states like South Dakota, in order to obtain services. In addition, medical professionals have also been impacted negatively as doctors that accepted positions and were preparing to relocate to the area were let go at the last minute and told that their job offers were cancelled.
A Medical Facility or a Personal Museum?
Beyond the medical services, the facility drew significant attention for its highly eccentric interior design. Many visitors described the clinic as a personal museum for its wealthy founder. The waiting areas were decorated with ancient Roman coins, an NFT that had been flown into space, and replica talking robots. Hoskinson even installed an “infinity room” featuring mirrors that reflected endless images. Most notably, the building included a private “napatorium” where the billionaire could take power naps to generate creative ideas, a practice inspired by Thomas Edison.
Backlash from the Cryptocurrency Community
The decision to fill a rural medical center with expensive oddities has left many cryptocurrency investors deeply frustrated. Following the closure announcement, several Cardano supporters criticized Hoskinson for seemingly torching his wealth on what they dubbed a vanity project. Angry consumers took to social media to express their frustration over displaying space NFTs and dinosaur fossils while their core business is experiencing a lack of success. Investors who have held on to their investments for extended periods say they felt deceived, as it seemed that the Founder emphasized personal interests over a viable, sustainable company.
What Happens Next for the Local Community?
The July 31 deadline is upon us, and the leaders of the clinic have committed to a smooth and compassionate transition for all involved. All employees remain committed to assisting patients in transferring their medical records and finding new healthcare providers prior to closure. Closing such a large facility in a short time frame will severely affect the rest of the health care system in that area. Regardless, Hoskinson hasn’t published any information regarding the failure of that clinic on any of his social media platforms, and although he recently made comments publicly, his recent focus has been on the future governance of his cryptocurrency projects.
