Elon Musk, the wealthy businessman and CEO of Tesla, reportedly said that he had “no choice” but to rejoin the Republican Party due of their previous consequences in politics, according to former US President Donald Trump. Trump’s description of Musk as “a good man” who is “80% super genius” but has “20% problems” that need to be fixed, despite constant disagreements, captures the complexity of their tense but enduring relationship.

Political Fallout and Friction:

The friendship between Trump and Musk fractured in June when Musk opposed Trump’s controversial tax-and-spending bill, branding it a “disgusting abomination.” This legislation ended electric vehicle tax credits that had previously benefited Tesla, despite Musk’s earlier support for Trump’s effort to reduce government spending. Musk responded by promising to create a third party and fight against Republicans who supported the plan. In response, Trump threatened to sever Musk’s contracts and subsidies. He also pulled out Jared Isaacman, Musk’s supporter and NASA leadership nominee, which increased the conflict.

Following this escalation, the two exchanged public barbs on social media. However, recent developments have pointed toward an attempt to mend fences. Musk, who has spent over $300 million backing Trump’s 2024 campaign and other GOP candidates, previously led the presidential Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump hosted a public farewell event at the White House when Musk stepped down in May, asserting, “Elon is really not leaving,” indicating an intent to maintain a collaboration despite political differences.

Tesla Stock Faces Headwinds Amid Musk’s Controversies and Market Volatility

With shares down about 20% year-to-date as investor fears over declining sales and CEO Elon Musk’s controversial public behavior grow, Tesla’s stock has seen tremendous volatility in 2025. Some market analysts, pointing to Tesla’s developments in autonomous driving technology and its intentions to launch more reasonably priced car models, are optimistic about the company’s long-term prospects despite the volatility. Although market sentiment is still impacted by short-term challenges relating to Musk’s business and political choices, fund managers point to Tesla’s strong cash position and innovation pipeline as reasons why the stock may rise in 2026. One important element affecting Tesla’s performance going forward is how Musk strikes a balance between his visionary leadership and the difficulties brought on by his unpredictable nature.

Public Defense and Market Impact:

Trump defended Musk last month when a Gallup poll showed that, out of 14 well-known Americans, Musk had the worst public image. “I think he had a bad moment, really bad moment,” Trump said on Fox News. However, he is a decent man, showing public support in spite of disputes. Due to political unpredictability and investor anxiety of governmental scrutiny of Musk’s business endeavors, Tesla’s stock performance has also suffered as a result of this turbulent connection, falling more than 17% in 2025. The cautious market opinion regarding Tesla’s future prospects is reflected in the “extremely bearish” sentiment of retail investors on sites such as Stocktwits.

Trump’s comments on the Scott Jennings Show perfectly capture the complicated relationship between Musk and the GOP, suggesting that in the face of divided national politics, Musk’s political affiliation is bound to come back to the Republican fold. He described the opposition as “radical left lunatics,” describing the political scene as being deeply split with no room for compromise. This framing suggests that, given the current political climate in the United States, Musk’s return to the GOP may not be a matter of inclination but rather of necessity.

In conclusion, even though Musk and Trump have had a lot of political disagreements, their relationship continues to have a big impact on how the billionaire influences American politics and business. Musk’s conflicting image and high-stakes political scheming continue to garner media attention, as the two individuals manage a relationship characterized by strategic alignments, personal conflicts, and mutual benefit.
