Vasu Shroff, the Indian-origin entrepreneur widely credited with shaping Dubai’s textile trade, passed away on April 26 at the age of 85. He died at his residence in the Satwa area of Dubai, reportedly due to natural causes.
Known across the UAE as the “Textile King,” Shroff was among the earliest Indian businessmen to establish a strong commercial presence in the Gulf. His passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from the business community and Indian diaspora, many of whom regarded him as a pioneer who helped transform Dubai into a global trading hub.
His funeral is scheduled to take place at the New Sonapur cemetery in Dubai, with community members expected to attend in large numbers to pay their final respects.

Born in India, Shroff moved to the UAE in 1960 as a teenager, travelling by boat from Mumbai to Sharjah at a time when the region was still known as the Trucial States. He began his entrepreneurial journey with a small textile shop in Bur Dubai, eventually founding Regal Traders, which later grew into a large retail network spanning multiple countries.
