YouTube watchers, prepare to wait a little longer before your favorite videos begin playing. The Google-owned site is experimenting with a new ad format that may make your viewing time a whole lot more advertisement-heavy: 30-second unskippable ads.
For years, YouTube has been gradually increasing its advertising. The site has added pause screen ads that show up when you pause a video, cracked down on ad blockers to keep viewers from skipping commercials altogether, and even used artificial intelligence to place ads strategically when viewers are most interested in content.
Now, YouTube is going a step further by beta testing such longer, obligatory ad breaks that viewers just can’t skip.
What’s New in These YouTube Ads?
Before, 30-second ads were only accessible on YouTube Reservation deals high-end ad packages usually saved for big brands with deeper pockets. But as per reports on Search Engine Land, Google Ads is now making this ad format available to many more advertisers through normal campaign options.
The new format is specifically targeted for television screens, including Smart TVs and devices like Chromecast. This means that when you watch YouTube on your living room television, you are most likely going to encounter these long commercial breaks. The advertisements will range from 16 to 30 seconds in duration, and there is positively no skip button to allow you to skip them.

YouTube is not done, however. These 30-second unskippable ads are being supplemented with other required ad formats, such as 6-second bumper ads and 15-second unskippable ads, as a means of creating a more robust ad environment.
How is the industry responding to these YouTube Ads?
To some surprise, however, some advertising professionals are hopeful for the change. Advertising agency ADSQUIRE’s head Anthony Higman feels the viewers will get used to seeing these extended commercials.
“The 15-second non-skippable YouTube ad format is my all-time favorite,” Higman said. “These can be targeted to audiences and keywords and the viewer has to view the ad to view the content they want to view.”
His assurance means that viewers will “probably” watch the entire 30-second commercials, particularly since they cannot help it.
What Does This Imply for Viewers?
The reality is straightforward. Viewers on YouTube will have to get used to longer waiting periods before their videos start playing. Search Engine Land warns that the viewers are offered the choice of tolerating these longer advert breaks or taking out a YouTube Premium subscription to avoid them altogether.
Nevertheless, even YouTube Premium is no longer as commercial-free as it used to be. The website has recently announced that ads will now start appearing on YouTube Shorts videos, even for paid Premium users. That transition impacts viewers of the lower-priced Premium Lite tier.
Alternatives and Workarounds
For users looking to reduce YouTube ad exposure without paying full Premium prices, YouTube is reportedly working on a new subscription model to mirror Spotify’s approach. Under the plan, two people would be offered access to Premium features for less than half the cost of purchasing two individual subscriptions.
YouTube’s latest move is an indication of the website’s continued efforts to maximize advertising revenue without compromising user experience. With TV viewing experiencing declines across the board, streaming services such as YouTube grow more valuable to advertisers trying to reach audiences.
The move follows as YouTube increasingly competes with other video platforms, but the company seems pleased that its vast viewership will learn to embrace longer, needed commercial breaks instead of leaving the site in droves.
For the moment, fans can look forward to seeing these 30-second unskippable commercials more and more, especially when they watch on TV screens. Whether or not this campaign will prompt more users towards paid membership or indeed become the new standard for viewing for free on YouTube is yet to be known.
