A Growing Crisis: Nurses Drowning in Documentation

In hospitals and care facilities worldwide, nurses face an exhausting reality: hours spent each day on administrative tasks. From updating patient records to managing schedules and documenting countless notes, paperwork has become an overwhelming part of the job. Not only does this reduce face-to-face time with patients, but it also fuels burnout and contributes to high turnover across the healthcare sector.

Recognizing this deep, structural challenge, Berlin-based healthtech startup voize has created a transformative solution—a voice-activated AI assistant designed specifically for nurses. And now, backed by a massive $50 million Series A round led by Balderton Capital, the company is gearing up to bring this innovative assistant to hospitals across Europe and the United States.

A Voice Assistant That Understands the Rhythm of Nursing

At its core, voize is built to simplify one of the most time-consuming aspects of nursing: documentation. Rather than typing, tapping, or navigating complicated systems, nurses can simply speak. The AI instantly processes the speech, converts it into structured documentation, and updates it across relevant systems.

Already supporting more than 75,000 nurses in 1,100 care facilities, voize claims it can reduce documentation time by up to 30 percent—a game-changing shift in an environment where every minute matters.

Unlike general dictation tools, voize is trained on complex medical terminology, understands regional accents, and fits seamlessly into the fast-paced workflows of care environments. What makes it even more practical is its ability to run directly on smartphones, eliminating the need for constant internet connectivity and ensuring patient data remains secure and private.

Born from a Personal Experience

voize’s origin story adds depth to its mission. Founded in 2020 by twin brothers Fabio and Marcel Schmidberger, along with Erik Ziegler, the idea came from a place close to home. When their grandfather entered a nursing home, the founders saw firsthand how much of the nurses’ day was swallowed by paperwork instead of care.

This personal experience became the driving force behind creating a system tailored not to general office workflows but to the real, urgent, and emotional environment of nursing.

Turning Conversations into Clinical Action

One of voize’s biggest strengths is how it integrates into existing hospital systems. The platform syncs with electronic health records (EHRs) and supports a wide range of functions:

  • Documentation

  • Scheduling

  • Medication administration

  • Wound care imaging

  • Emergency alerts

This means that a simple verbal update—“Patient’s wound dressing changed at 3 PM”—is instantly processed, categorized, and logged. Nurses no longer need to remember details for later or juggle multiple systems. The AI effectively becomes a real-time companion, silently organizing, structuring, and updating data while nurses stay focused on the person in front of them.

Expanding Across Europe and the United States

With fresh capital in hand, voize is preparing for its next big chapter: rapid expansion. The company aims to establish local teams, improve the capabilities of its AI assistant, and adapt to the specific workflows of hospitals across Europe and the U.S.

As healthcare systems struggle with staff shortages and rising burnout rates, tools like voize offer not just operational benefits but also a way to improve job satisfaction and retain skilled nursing professionals.

Restoring the Heart of Nursing

Ultimately, voize is more than a productivity tool—it’s an attempt to return humanity to nursing. By automating the repetitive and time-consuming administrative tasks, the platform allows nurses to do what they do best: observe, listen, connect, and care.

As the startup expands and evolves, its mission remains simple yet powerful—to ensure that every working day for nurses becomes more efficient, less stressful, and centered around real human care.
