Why Scammers Used Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter to Pull Off a $5.3 Billion Fraud

The fans who are attempting to reach their superstar of choice online are losing billions of dollars to professional scammers who are using AI technology to impersonate superstars on various online platforms. Recently, a social media security firm called Spikerz exposed a shocking truth. Cybercriminals pretending to be celebrities like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Billie Eilish have managed to steal a total of $5.3 billion from their fans in 2025 alone.

This is achieved by hackers creating fake profiles and similar content to deceive fans into purchasing copies of products that do not exist. Examples include concert tickets and cryptocurrencies.

Why Swift and Carpenter are 2025’s Biggest Targets for AI Fraud?

In the report, the platforms listed as “high-risk entry points for fraud and brand damage” include Instagram, TikTok, and X, with the growing sophistication of impersonational scams using generative AI tools making the scams look more realistic with time.

Swifty and Carpenter Top the Artists Who are Targeted

So, as reported by Spikerz, the most impersonated artists of 2025 are: Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, followed by Billie Eilish, BTS, Adele, Ed Sheeran, BLACKPINK, Ariana Grande, Drake, and Lewis Capaldi.

Yet, it’s not random targeting. Scammers target musicians because of the trust and connection a musician has with fans. They know this makes fans more gullible when they think they’re talking to their stars.

“Social networking sites have become the most essential meeting point of artists and their audiences, so they are the most exposed,” explained Scott Cohen, one of the founders of The Orchard and an advisor for Spikerz. “If we desire artists to experiment, we have to provide them with digital space where they won’t find themselves under siege all the time.”

These scammers use various methods based on the artist and the fans they are targeting. Taylor Swift fans are targeted by fake ticket ads, fake stores for buying merch, and fake VIP bundles that appear legit at first glance.

How Imposter Scams Are Eroding Artist-Fan Trust?

A serious problem that has affected the younger generation of Sabrina Carpenter fans has to do with the cloning of accounts, which have posted fake meet-and-greet opportunities, while that of Billie Eilish has involved fake live streams and raffles that target the harvesting of personal data and payment information.

Billboard has also reported a number of major incidents in 2025 to show the magnitude of the challenge. There was the audacious hack that saw the simultaneous hijacking of the Instagram accounts of artists like Adele, Future, Tyla, Pink Floyd, and the Michael Jackson estate to be used in a cryptocurrency scam that made away with a minimum of $49,000.

There was another incident where the fraudsters posed as Johnny Depp and his agents, scamming victims, reportedly totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, by communicating with them as if they were the actors or agents.

The harm caused extends well beyond a direct financial loss to fans. According to Spikerz, imitation scams also negatively affect an artist’s reputation, which can lead to a loss of future income, a problem that is difficult to calculate and fix.

“When fans are deceived by an imposter account into purchasing non-existent merch, tickets, or experiences, the artist not only loses immediate income but suffers a reputational injury that will negatively affect future sales and interactions,” the report says.

How Sophisticated Scams are Eroding Fan Trust Best for an editorial or deep-dive article?

As a result, when their fans get scammed, they may become even more dubious about genuine opportunities that come their way in the future from these artists. This is especially true when it comes to things such as ticket sales, merchandise, and engagement rates on platforms like social media.

The quick emergence of generative AI technology has made this type of scam much more sophisticated and difficult to recognize. Scammers are now capable of producing believable imitation videos, voices, and photo images of famous celebrities that appear and sound real. They are also able to reproduce their style of writing and the way they interact with their fans.

However, with the increasing might of these tools, it seems that the problem will only worsen unless a proper verification process is implemented on these platforms and their users are also educated on how to spot a phishing account and a phishing offer.

In the meantime, fans are advised to check any offers or messages through official sources, be wary of offers that look too good to be true, and report any suspicious accounts to platform mods.

A spurning of the Paramount bid all but seems preordained, leaving only two questions: will it raise its bid or walk away, enabling Netflix to complete what would rank as one of history’s largest media mergers?
