2 March, 2016, Germany: Social media giant Facebook, again falls in trouble as Germany has opened an investigation into Facebook’s use of user data, which may be in breach of the country’s data protection laws, reports Reuters. According to the country’s watchdog, the Federal Cartel Office, the company has not been operating on the legal guidelines set by the country. It is not informing its users with satisfactory details on what data it is collecting from them and how they are going to use it.

Elaborating on the subject, Andreas Mundt, President, Federal Cartel Office said, “For advertising-financed internet services such as Facebook, user data is hugely important. For this reason it is essential to also examine under the aspect of abuse of market power whether the consumers are sufficiently informed about the type and extent of data collected”.

Facebook has over 1.6 billion active user in Germany and these numbers are increasing constantly. Germany has strict data protection norms and it seems like Facebook has put these norms on the side-lines. This negligence by the social media has raised many concerns among the legal authorities of the country.

Perhaps in anticipation of the Federal Cartel Office’s announcement of the investigation, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited Berlin last week on a “charm offensive,” Reuters reports.
