15 August 2016, USA :

Google is working on a totally new operating system – and it has nothing to do with Android. A page has surfaced on code-sharing GitHub about the new OS, called – for now, at least – Fuchsia.

It’s not based on Android, nor does it build upon the Linux kernel. The GitHub page is pretty sparse on explainers: Its description is simply: “Pink + Purple = Fuchsia (a new Operating System).” There has been no official announcement from Google.

Android is currently the most popular mobile operating system in the world by a massive margin. At Gartner’s last count, Google’s Android OS held 78.8% of the global market compared to 17.9% for Apple’s iOS platform. Meanwhile Net Marketshare measures usage to determine market share and it puts those figures a touch closer at 66.01% for Android and 27.84% for iOS as of July. In either case, Android’s lead is huge right now — but that doesn’t mean Google plans to sit still and hope that Android stays on top forever.

All of it points to Fuchsia being Google’s attempt to unify its sprawling network of devices, or at least create things that can talk to everything Google has its fingers in. There’s a huge pile of smartphones, Chromebooks, Chromecasts, and other technology running Google’s various operating systems. It’s something that Google has needed to streamline for a while.
