X Flags NPR News Link as “Unsafe”
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

X, formerly Twitter and now under Elon Musk’s ownership, has sparked concern by labeling a link to an NPR article as “unsafe.” This warning, usually reserved for links with malware or misleading information, appeared when users tried to access a story about a confrontation involving a Trump campaign staffer at Arlington National Cemetery. The situation has raised questions about whether X is intentionally obstructing news distribution.

Warning Notice for Users

On Thursday, X users saw a warning message when clicking a link to NPR’s article about the Arlington Cemetery incident. The message read: “Warning: this link may be unsafe,” followed by the URL, https://npr.org/2024/08/29/nx-s1-5092087/trump-arlington-cemetery-altercation-tiktok. Users were given the option to return to the previous page or continue to the NPR site despite the warning.

Reason Behind the Warning Unclear

The exact cause of the warning remains uncertain. X’s policy includes blocking links deemed malicious, spammy, or misleading, but it’s unclear why this particular NPR story was flagged. No immediate explanation has been provided for why this news item, in particular, was targeted.

URL Change and Resolution

NPR subsequently altered the URL from https://npr.org/2024/08/29/nx-s1-5092087/trump-arlington-cemetery-altercation-tiktok to https://www.npr.org/2024/08/29/nx-s1-5092087/trump-arlington-cemetery-altercation-video. It’s unclear if this change was prompted by the warning or if the original URL was incorrectly flagged. The issue seems resolved now, but X has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

NPR’s Response and Previous Issues

Steve Inskeep, host of NPR’s Morning Edition, pointed out the issue, suggesting it might be a “good faith mistake” since other NPR articles were accessible. However, given X’s recent actions—including limiting access to political accounts—the situation remains suspect. X has faced criticism for its content moderation practices and political decisions.

Background on X and NPR Tensions

This episode adds to the ongoing tension between Elon Musk and NPR. In 2023, Musk labeled NPR as “state-affiliated media,” a term typically reserved for propaganda outlets in authoritarian countries. NPR responded by withdrawing from the platform. This latest incident reflects ongoing controversies about Musk’s influence over X and his support for former President Donald Trump.

The incident raises concerns about X’s content moderation policies. With Musk’s known backing of Trump and his control over X’s policies, there are fears that this could signal increased censorship or manipulation of news. As X navigates these challenges, the broader implications for news dissemination and platform integrity are still unfolding. This situation highlights growing scrutiny over how social media platforms manage and control news content.
