While the news that GTA 6 won’t hit shelves until May 2026 was a tough pill to swallow, the three-minute trailer gave gamers something exciting to chew on. The first trailer, released at the end of 2023, introduced us to Jason and Lucia a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde navigating life on the wrong side of the law in Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional take on Florida. The new trailer offers deeper insight into their pasts, their motivations, and the sun-soaked, vice-laden world they inhabit. In this second glimpse, we see that Jason isn’t just a career criminal his story has nuance. Once a troubled teen with few prospects, he joined the army in a bid to escape a chaotic life. But upon returning home, the demons he tried to leave behind caught up with him.
The trailer opens with Jason taking odd jobs and cruising through the neon-lit streets of Vice City, until he picks up Lucia, who’s just been released from prison. Her charge? Protecting her family another thread suggesting this duo isn’t driven purely by greed, but perhaps by survival and loyalty.
From there, the trailer launches into a rapid-fire sequence of heists, shootouts, late-night parties, and high-speed escapes. We see Jason and Lucia jet-skiing across turquoise waters, clinking glasses aboard a yacht, and speeding through the city’s slick streets. Rockstar is known for building immersive worlds populated with unforgettable characters, and GTA 6 looks to continue that tradition.
The trailer shows several new faces, that includes Raul Bautista, a grizzled bank robber with a mysterious past; Brian Heder, a slick smuggler with underworld connections; and Real Dimez, a flashy rap duo that seems poised to play a much larger role in the game’s social satire.
Leonida: More Than Just Vice City
The game’s setting is shaping up to be one of its most ambitious features. While Vice City modeled after Miami is the beating heart of the game, it’s just one part of a much broader map. The trailer shows off the sun-drenched Leonida Keys, the industrial sprawl of Ambrosia, the swampy depths of Grassriver and the wild terrain of Kalaga National Park.
Expect to encounter everything from biker gangs and corrupt officials to “hillbilly mystics,” a term only Rockstar could make both absurd and intriguing.
Stunning Visuals, But No Gameplay Yet
While the trailer didn’t feature gameplay, it was composed entirely of in-engine footage from a PlayStation 5, and fans were quick to notice just how breathtaking it looked.
Why the Long Wait?
Of course, all this comes with the caveat that GTA 6 won’t arrive until May 2026. Rockstar, known for its perfectionist approach, says the extra time is needed to deliver the kind of quality players expect. According to journalist Jason Schreier, the delay is also part of an effort to avoid “crunch” a term for the excessive overtime that has plagued the industry and once drew criticism toward Rockstar itself.
While the delay hit fans hard, it also rattled the stock market. Shares of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, dropped by 10% after the announcement. That’s how high the stakes are for this game, which the industry is banking on to shatter records and boost console sales.
