Pokémon Battlegrounds offers a different way to enjoy Pokémon battles. Instead of following the traditional turn-based combat system, the game focuses on real-time action, where Pokémon move, attack, dodge, and defend against their opponents. This creates a more dynamic experience that rewards good timing, smart decisions, and an understanding of Pokémon types.

For players who enjoy competitive Pokémon battles but want something different from the mainline games, Pokémon Battlegrounds is worth exploring. However, beginners may need some time to understand its mechanics and how battles work.
What Is Pokémon Battlegrounds?
Pokémon Battlegrounds is a fan-made Pokémon battle project that focuses on animated, real-time combat. Pokémon use individually animated moves, while trainers make decisions about attacks, switches, and battle timing.
Unlike traditional Pokémon games, battles do not follow a strict turn-by-turn structure. Both sides can act in real time, making movement, defensive decisions, and the timing of attacks important parts of the experience.
The project also features familiar Pokémon, trainers, moves, and locations inspired by the wider Pokémon franchise.
How to Start Playing Pokémon Battlegrounds
The easiest way to get started is to understand how the controls work before entering a competitive match. Here is a step-by-step guide for new players.
1. Open Pokémon Battlegrounds and Set Up Your Trainer
The playable version of Pokémon Battlegrounds is called PB Ranked. It runs directly in a web browser, so players do not need to install a separate game client.
When you first open the game, you will need to:
-
Choose a trainer name.
-
Select a trainer character.
-
Sign in to access your account.
-
Set up your Pokémon team.
You can change your trainer name and character later. The game features fully evolved Pokémon, but legendary Pokémon are not included in its standard team selection.
Once your team is ready, you can select the Find Battle option to search for an opponent.
2. Understand How Real-Time Battles Work
Battles in Pokémon Battlegrounds are different from those in traditional Pokémon games. Your Pokémon can move and attack without waiting for you to select an action every turn.
There are two main ways to control your Pokémon:
-
Auto Mode: Your Pokémon moves, dodges, and chooses attacks automatically. You can still select specific moves whenever you want.
-
Manual Mode: You take direct control of your Pokémon’s movement and decide when to attack or dodge.
Beginners should start with Auto Mode because it allows them to understand the battle system without worrying about every movement.
When you become more comfortable, switch to Manual Mode to gain greater control over your battles.
3. Learn How to Use Pokémon Moves
Each Pokémon has four available moves during a battle. These moves appear as buttons on the battle screen.
To use an attack, simply select its corresponding move button. The attack will be performed when the Pokémon finishes its current action.
However, there are a few things worth understanding:
-
Cooldowns: Every move has a waiting period before it can be used again. Stronger attacks generally have longer cooldowns.
-
Range: Some moves work at close range, while others can hit opponents from across the arena.
-
Accuracy: Attacks can miss if an opponent moves away or dodges at the right moment.
-
Type advantages: Pokémon retain their familiar type matchups, so choosing effective attacks can make a significant difference.
A useful beginner strategy is to avoid repeatedly selecting the strongest attack. Instead, learn when to use different moves and pay attention to their cooldowns.
4. Switch Pokémon and Use Special Abilities
Switching Pokémon is another important part of winning battles. You can select another Pokémon from your available team whenever you want to change your active fighter.
If your current Pokémon faints, you must choose a replacement to continue fighting.
Some Pokémon also have special transformations and abilities. For example, Mega Evolution can be activated once per battle when your selected Pokémon is on the field. Greninja can also use its Battle Bond transformation.
Remember that healing is limited. Healing moves restore 30% of a Pokémon’s maximum health, and each Pokémon can heal twice during a battle.
5. Try Practice Battles Before Playing Ranked
If you are unfamiliar with the mechanics, jumping directly into competitive matches is not the best approach.
Pokémon Battlegrounds provides several ways to practise:
-
Practice vs Bot: Fight an AI opponent and select the difficulty level. Your rating is not affected.
-
Friendly Match: Create a private battle room and invite friends using a room link or code.
-
Tournaments: Participate in single-elimination competitions against other players.
-
Ranked Battles: Compete against other players and work your way up the leaderboard.
Practice matches are particularly useful for testing different Pokémon combinations and understanding how their moves interact.
6. Understand Battle Timers and Winning Conditions
Pokémon Battlegrounds has different time limits depending on the match format. Three-versus-three battles last four minutes, while six-versus-six battles have a seven-minute limit.
During the final quarter of a match, sudden death begins. Attacks become increasingly powerful, reaching up to four times their normal strength towards the end.
If the timer expires, the team with more combined health remaining wins the battle.
This makes defensive decisions just as important as attacking. Avoid unnecessary damage and use your Pokémon’s abilities carefully.
