Major breakthroughs in Asia’s technology landscape are revolutionizing the way nations interact with artificial intelligence, internet infrastructure, and digital rule, and with profound consequences for tens of millions of users across the region. Zhejiang University has succeeded in creating a censorship-resistant version of DeepSeek’s hit R1 AI model with the assistance of Huawei’s Ascend 1000 accelerators, a significant step towards China’s drive for technological self-reliance. The new model, which is called DeepSeek-R1-Safe, demonstrates the possibility of employing domestic hardware to align AI systems with state preferences.

The university researchers developed a post-training model that dramatically improved the system’s compliance with Chinese content policies. Their success is impressive, the updated system has a “nearly 100 percent success rate” against 14 categories of content objectionable to the authorities, such as toxic speech, politically sensitive content, and content that can incite illegal activity.

China and India’s Strategic Moves in the AI Race

What makes this achievement notable is the minimal performance impact. The improvements in security came at only a one percent decline in the overall capability of the model from the base DeepSeek-R1. The team also toughened the model’s jailbreaking resistance, where users try to circumvent imposed restrictions.

Apart from meeting safety requirements, Chinese researchers are proud of their model being superior to Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen system in terms of regulatory compliance, indicating increased competition in the domestic AI market.

India’s government is reportedly preparing to sanction a record 20-year tax holiday for new data center development, a move that would be able to quickly spur the country’s digital infrastructure expansion. The action complements New Delhi’s broader vision of becoming technologically independent while supporting its burgeoning digital economy.

The government has also suggested tax benefits that would complement India’s existing digital push, such as mass government online services, large-scale creation of broadband infrastructure, and a separate fund to build sovereign AI capabilities.

Even though some top global tech players like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google already have data centers in India, the government is still aggressively promoting developmentof  domestic capacity.

Equinix Expands in India as Taliban Bans Fiber Internet, with Uncertain Role of Huawei

The timing is well chosen as international players are just ramping up their Indian business. Equinix recently opened its first International Business Exchange data center in Chennai, India’s fifth-largest city, highlighting the growing demand for digital infrastructure services.

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has banned fiber optic internet access in Balkh province because of concerns over immoral behavior on the internet. The Islamic government assures that it will build another network on the basis of other physical infrastructure, but no timeline has been announced.

Residents of the affected areas have to now rely on mobile internet service, which individuals describe as frustratingly slow, according to reports by Associated Press. This restriction is another step in the Taliban’s efforts to limit access to information since their return.

From 60,000 New Hires to AI Healthcare and Artistic Innovation

Samsung has announced plans to hire 60,000 employees in the next five years, ramping up its workforce aggressively to meet competition in the world marketplace for semiconductors and consumer electronics. The South Korean giant will expand its student internship programs in universities and keep sponsoring the National Skills Competition to seek out technical talent.

In addition to normal hiring, Samsung is also exploring visionary applications of health technology. Samsung is collaborating to create systems that could potentially diagnose the onset of Alzheimer’s disease through monitoring of smartphone usage habits like typing speed, texting habits, call frequency, and voice patterns. This is a thrilling convergence of consumer technology and medical diagnostics.

Taiwan’s MSI has created a beautiful laptop that incorporates technology and ancient art. Prestige 13 AI+ Ukiyo-e Edition features a modern take on Hokusai’s famous “Great Wave off Kanagawa” woodcut print, which will be attracting for users who appreciate cutting-edge technology and Japanese traditional appearance.

These trends across Asia demonstrate how different nations are balancing technology advancements with values, regulatory demands, and economic objectives. From China’s AI security initiatives to India’s infrastructure incentives and Afghanistan’s internet restrictions, governments are increasingly taking control of their digital futures.

The tech landscape in the region is expected to change rapidly, with far-reaching implications beyond country boundaries as these innovations and policies shape global tech trends.
