In a significant development that reflects the ongoing turmoil within the global aerospace industry, Boeing has laid off up to 180 engineers from its India operations as part of a sweeping global restructuring initiative. The job cuts took place at the Boeing India Engineering and Technology Center (BIETC) in Bengaluru, a key site in the American aerospace giant’s international engineering footprint.

Dr Brendan Nelson, Boeing’s Senior Vice President and President of Boeing Global, confirmed the layoffs in an exclusive interview with the Times of India. “We are right-sizing the company. As part of that, 150–180 Boeing employees in India have been laid off,” he said.

Despite the layoffs, Nelson maintained that India remains a vital part of Boeing’s strategic vision. “We’ve taken great care to make sure that none of the roles affected will impact customers, government projects, or safety-critical operations,” he added.

Behind the Cuts: Strategic Realignment, Not Retrenchment

The layoffs at BIETC are part of a broader restructuring exercise across Boeing’s global operations. The company has embarked on a plan to reduce its global headcount by about 10%, which translates to nearly 17,000 jobs. The goal is to stabilize at around 162,000 employees worldwide, including approximately 24,000 employees stationed outside the United States.

In India, Boeing employs more than 7,000 professionals, most of whom are based in Bengaluru and Chennai. While the layoffs are unsettling, they affect only a fraction of this workforce. Boeing executives emphasize that the move should not be seen as a retreat from India, but rather as a recalibration based on evolving business priorities.

“There are areas where we are still growing,” said Nelson. “We have retained people in roles linked to customer delivery, safety, and quality, and we’re hiring where we see future capability needs.”

India’s Strategic Importance Remains Intact

Boeing’s decision to lay off engineers in India might raise eyebrows, particularly given the company’s significant investments in the region. Its new Bengaluru campus, which became operational in January 2024, is among the company’s most prominent engineering facilities outside the United States. The site focuses on “complex advanced aerospace work” and plays a critical role in product development, testing, and systems integration.

India accounts for more than a quarter of Boeing’s overseas workforce. When supply chain partnerships are included, Boeing’s total footprint in India climbs to nearly 14,000 jobs. This includes around 320 suppliers, some of whom work on core aerospace and defense projects for the global market.

Boeing’s top brass continues to reiterate that the layoffs are a temporary measure and that India remains a cornerstone of its long-term strategy. “This is not a retreat; it’s a recalibration,” said Nelson.

Operational Recovery and CEO Ortberg’s India Focus

The layoffs are taking place against a backdrop of broader operational challenges at Boeing. The company has been grappling with production delays, supply chain disruptions, and safety concerns in the wake of high-profile issues surrounding its 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner programs.

Kelly Ortberg, who assumed the role of Boeing President and CEO in August 2024, has made it his mission to stabilize the company. One of his first international visits was to India, a move widely seen as a signal of the country’s growing significance in Boeing’s global roadmap.

“Ortberg was deeply impressed by the people and the complexity of the work being done here,” Nelson said. Since taking over, Ortberg has prioritized regaining control of production timelines and delivery execution, both of which are vital to restoring Boeing’s reputation and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Boeing’s restructuring comes at a time when Indian carriers like Air India and Akasa are awaiting the delivery of aircraft to meet rising passenger demand. Delays in manufacturing and delivery have put pressure on these airlines, many of which are in aggressive expansion phases post-pandemic.

Industry insiders suggest that Boeing’s ability to deliver on time will be a critical factor in maintaining its competitive edge in the region. “Every delay has downstream effects from route planning to passenger capacity to financial forecasting,” said an aviation analyst.

The layoffs, though modest in number, could raise concerns about project timelines, especially if skilled engineering talent is lost.

Despite the short-term setbacks, Boeing executives remain cautiously optimistic about the future. Nelson hinted that headcount in India could once again rise as manufacturing and global aviation demand pick up speed.

“India will continue to be a growth engine for Boeing. What we’re doing now is simply aligning resources where they are needed most,” Nelson said.

This realignment, Boeing insists, is designed to preserve core operations while ensuring flexibility in a rapidly changing market environment.

As Boeing adjusts its sails to navigate a challenging business landscape, its decisions in India will be closely monitored. While the layoffs are part of a global restructuring effort, the broader message from Boeing is one of strategic realignment rather than withdrawal.

For employees, government stakeholders, and airline customers alike, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Boeing can translate its cautious optimism into sustained recovery and long-term stability.
