On the 4th of January 2015, 5 women will set off from Mumbai and drive along the coast of India in a 5000km long journey through 8 states over 28 days. A total of 7 women will participate on this drive, joining at different stages of the journey. They will travel down from Mumbai to Kanyakumari and then up to Kolkata, meeting and interviewing inspiring women along the way.
This travel project is called the BuffyFish Coastal Diaries and is organised by BuffyFish, a Pune-based travel inititiative. BuffyFish, founded by Vidula Tade, is a platform for women to get together, explore and travel together, all over the world. The Coastal Diaries is the first such adventure.
Why only women?
Women love to travel and since traveling is a very personal experience, many women may prefer to travel alone. However there is a real concern about safety and though many women do want to travel, they find they don’t have access to it easily. Their families may be averse to them going on their own. Or they themselves may not feel confident of making such journeys.
BuffyFish is a platform, where women can meet other women-folk and travel with them.
Why this particular journey?
First there’s the joy of getting up in a new place each morning. And a love for travel and adventure! We want to discover our country – talk to the people, experience the culture in different places, marvel at the natural beauty and of course, try out the food!
The documentary
As part of the 28-day journey, we plan on meeting inspiring women who live along the coast. We plan to interview them, record their stories and publish them in the form of a blog as well as a documentary film.
For example, in Kerala we will be meeting the founder and drivers of She Taxi, a 24×7 taxi service meant for women and run by women. We will also be meeting the woman who handles the crocodile bank in Tamil Nadu.
