If you were looking forward to that relaxing holiday but all that was available was time in an airport waiting area, then worry not, you are not alone. A malfunction in the software by CrowdStrike has led to the disruption of flights, delayed travel, and general distress for customers across the globe.Â
To find the cause of the chaos, one would need to go through the incidents in order to reassure the characters that they are not alone and that the events they are experiencing are not unique to them.
There is a view by the popular cybersecurity company CrowdStrike that recently came across with a major issue in updating content for Windows hosts. This hiccup was not hacking or some data breach, it was a simple technology malfunction in transition that was unavoidable. While CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz has stated that his team is quite engaged in addressing this issue and assisting clients impacted by this disruption, it is still clear that such an incident may lead to detrimental consequences.
Airlines Scramble to Cope
Many large companies operating air-lines in the U. S. have not escaped from this unanticipated tech disaster. This is what each of them is saying and doing to the customers out there.
United Airlines
United Airlines informed everyone that the tech issues affected their computer operations like it did to other airlines around the globe. They have begun to depart some particular flights but anticipate more disruptions are still likely in the day. The beauty of it is that, if you booked your flight out of any of the 13 listed airports, the airline is offering you the opportunity to re-book your flight till the 25th of July and this you are not charged the change fee. So, it is like having a silver lining even though the weather has been thorny and stormy all along.
American Airlines
Even American Airlines could not avoid getting swept up in this digital storm. They were very much engaged in solving the problem with their vendor and they have been able to restore the flow of business by early morning. However, one should realize that there is always a possibility of delays or even cancellation entirely. They are continuing to notify the effected customers through its application and text messages. In case you are departing from one of the 11 focusing airports, you can rebook your flight until July 25th without having any charges of a rebooking fee.
Delta Air Lines
Delta also experienced a similar problem through closing their services to work on the problem. They have commenced some flight departures but recommend that there might be more delays and cancelations in the subsequent day. For Delta customers, there’s a bit of bad news: The bad news is that it would cost me 5000 to change the date of the flight I have reserved for June 26th and I only have until the 24th of July to rebook the flight and without having to pay a change fee but the tickets should be in the same class. For any itinerary that is rebooked, there could still be some variation in the fares but there is no change fee anymore if the booking is done on or after July 24 of this year.
Spirit Airlines
Other airlines including Spirit also suffered disruptions. It impacted their reservations, and the airport systems which in turn caused a string of flight delays, and canceled flights. If you had a canceled flight with Spirit, you can just get a refund for the tickets, you can get a reservation credit, or you can be rerouted to take a different flight with Spirit Airlines. If your flight was delayed by more than two hours, then you are free to rebook your flight, or you can get a reservation for a flight credit or refund for the flight. However, Spirit airlines will not offer complimentary hotel accommodation, complimentary ground transportation, or meal voucher so I suggest you may need to consider taking some snacks and more exercise in patience.
What You Should Do
If you’re one of the many travelers caught in this tech mess, here’s a quick guide on what to do:
Check Your Flight Status: You can get information from your airline’s app or website and be up to date with the latest announcements.
Rebook if Needed: Do not miss this chance to attend the grand concert and fly to your destination free of charge, having used the fee waivers to alter your flight successfully to avoid additional charges.
Stay Informed: Wait for notifications to appear as text messages or email.
Prepare for Delays: Carry some additional things with you for emergencies and be more open minded when it comes to route plotting.
This technical error might have upset you had a perfect holiday schedule, but with the flexibility of change fees, and the efforts put by the airlines to resume the flights, you will soon be flying again.
