Ursula is a major boss in Atlantica in Kingdom Hearts, and the fight can be confusing if you rely on normal attacks. There are two battles: the first centers on her magic cauldron, while the second pits Sora against Giant Ursula. With the right spells, items, and movement, both become easier.

Prepare Before the Fight
Before entering Ursula’s lair, use the nearby save point to restore health and magic. Equip Ethers to recover magic points (MP), and keep Cure available if Sora has learned it. Fire is useful in the first fight because it is easy to select and costs relatively little MP.
How to Beat Ursula in the First Fight
Ursula appears with her eels, Flotsam and Jetsam. The large cauldron in the middle of the room is your first target.
Follow these steps:
- Lock on to the cauldron.
- Cast Fire or another available spell at it several times.
- Wait for it to glow and erupt, stunning Ursula and the eels.
- Swim over to Ursula and land as many Keyblade combos as possible.
- Move away when she recovers, then repeat the process.
Physical attacks will not damage the cauldron, so use magic. The liquid’s color does not mean you must match it with a particular spell. Keep casting when Ursula is not actively using the cauldron to launch an attack.
Ursula may create a whirlpool or send damaging attacks through the room. Change your swimming height to avoid danger instead of staying still. Her eels can interrupt your spells, but you do not need to chase them. If you run low on MP, strike Flotsam or Jetsam to help restore it, or use an Ether.
Make the Most of Each Stun
The opening after the cauldron erupts is your best chance to deal damage. Swim straight to Ursula and attack continuously with full combos. Call for help if the command is available so Donald and Goofy can contribute.
When Ursula starts spinning, retreat instead of trading hits. Wait for a safer moment, then return to the cauldron. Keep Cure ready and heal before Sora’s health gets dangerously low. Repeat this cycle until Ursula is defeated. Winning grants Mermaid Kick, which helps Sora swim faster and move against strong currents.
How to Beat Giant Ursula
The second fight takes place beyond the Calm Depths. After earning Mermaid Kick, use it to push through the strong current and reach the area marked “???” on the map. Save and restock items before entering.
Giant Ursula has a large health bar and attacks with lightning, water currents, and a powerful energy beam. Her head is her main weak point, so focus your attacks there rather than hitting her body.
Use this strategy:
- Keep moving and swim up or down to avoid lightning strikes.
- Approach the side or back of Ursula’s head and attack with Keyblade combos.
- Swim away when she opens her mouth and prepares her beam attack.
- If she inhales, use Mermaid Kick to escape before she can bite Sora.
- Heal when needed and use items if your MP runs low.
Timing matters more than staying close. After a combo, move away before the next attack lands. Try to position yourself behind her head, since she often turns toward Sora. If you have Stop magic, it can briefly hold her in place and create an opening for attacks.
