In the world of Minecraft, the sight of a zombie villager stumbling around can feel frightening — but it’s also an opportunity. You can restore that villager back to life, turning a destructive monster into a helpful ally. This guide will walk you step by step through how to cure a zombie villager, what you need, and a few extra tips to make the process safer and more reliable.

Before you try to cure one, it helps to know what you’re dealing with.
- A zombie villager is a special kind of undead creature that was once a villager but was infected by a zombie.
- These creatures behave like normal zombies: they’re hostile, may carry weapons or wear armor, and will burn in daylight unless protected.
- When cured, the zombie villager becomes a normal villager again and retains—or recovers—their profession and trade options.
- Also, curing a zombie villager gives you better trade discounts with that villager (a “thank you” for saving them).
With that in mind, let’s gather the tools and walk through the cure.
What You Need to Cure a Zombie Villager
These are the essentials:
ItemPurposeSplash Potion of WeaknessTo weaken the zombie villager, putting it into a vulnerable stateGolden Apple (regular, not enchanted)To perform the actual cure while the zombie is weakenedSafe enclosure / shelterTo protect the zombie villager during the curing processBlocks, doors, roof, fencingTo build that enclosure and keep out danger
Optional but helpful:
- Iron bars or a bed: these speed up the transformation process
- Bow and arrow of weakness: an alternate method to apply weakness at range
- Armor and shield: for your protection as you work near a hostile mob
Step-by-Step: Curing the Zombie Villager
Follow these steps with care:
- Find a Zombie Villager
At night, zombies spawn frequently. There’s a small chance (about 5%) one will spawn as a zombie villager instead of a regular zombie. Also, if a zombie kills a normal villager (except on easy mode), the villager may turn into a zombie villager. Sometimes, hidden structures like igloo basements have zombie villagers you can rescue. - Trap and Shelter It
Once you find one, lure it into an enclosure. Build walls, place a roof (to block sunlight), and include a door or gate so you can safely enter and exit. Don’t cure multiple zombie villagers in the same enclosure unless you’re confident you can feed all of them at the same moment. Otherwise, they might attack each other during the process. - Apply Weakness
Select your splash potion of weakness and throw it at the zombie villager. If done correctly, you’ll see gray swirling particles around it. This status indicates that the villager is weakened and ready for the next step.- If you don’t have a splash potion, you can convert a normal potion of weakness into one by adding gunpowder in a brewing stand.
- Alternatively, arrow of weakness or a witch’s thrown potion (if one happens to be nearby) can also deliver the weakness effect.
- Feed the Golden Apple
With the zombie villager under the weakness effect, use (right click / use key) a golden apple on it. Red particles will appear and the villager will begin shaking. This marks the start of the curing process. - Wait and Protect
Be patient. It takes 3 to 5 minutes for the zombie villager to convert into a normal villager. During this time, don’t strike it, don’t expose it to zombies or hostile mobs, and make sure the enclosure stays secure. If you included iron bars or a bed in the enclosure, this may speed the transformation. - The Transformation
After the waiting period, the zombie villager becomes a regular villager. Congratulations! Now they can trade with you, and often at a discount, because you cured them. - Setup Their Job
The newly freed villager will not always have a job. Place a workstation (e.g. lectern, composter, furnace) nearby so the villager can claim a profession. That helps you benefit from valuable trades.
