What does it mean to encrypt an iMessage?

Encrypting an iMessage means you are simply turning your texts into a secret code that only you and the recipient can read. It is like sending a message in a language that can only be decoded on the other end and cannot be read by any third party in the middle. Apple uses end-to-end encryption, which is the best standard for privacy and really lets you drop your worries at the right moment. When you click on send, your phone changes the message using a complex key. It travels through the internet as complete, and only the receiver’s device has the specific key to unscramble it. This ensures that hackers, carriers, and even Apple itself cannot see your photos, videos, or private conversations. This is an amazing method to keep user data safe and convey your heart out.

Steps to encrypt an iMessage

If you want to encrypt an iMessage on an iPhone, then these are the steps that can come in handy!

  • To do this, you have to start by opening your Settings app and scrolling down to the Apps section. Once you’re there, tap on Messages.
  • Make sure the toggle for iMessage is switched to the on position. This will ascertain that you are using Apple’s proprietary protocol rather than standard SMS.
  • Now, check that you are signed in with your Apple ID. This identity is what generates the unique public and private keys used to lock and unlock your data. This is crucial for unlocking the sort of feature we want.
  • At this point, when you start a new chat, look at the send button. If it is blue, the system has verified that the recipient also has an Apple device, and the encryption is active.
  • And parallelly, to keep your encrypted backups safe, just go to your iCloud settings and verify that Advanced Data Protection is turned on. This extends that same high-level security to your message history stored in the cloud.
  • If you see a green bubble, that means the message is being sent as a traditional text, which is not encrypted by Apple. It means that the recipient does not use an Apple device, and the encryption doesn’t apply there.

It also means that you can only utilize the feature of encryption if there is an iPhone on both sides.
