Mega Greninja is one of the newest Mega Evolutions coming to Pokémon GO, adding a powerful Water- and Dark-type option. The main opportunity arrives with Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale, running September 5 and 6. The event also gives players a convenient chance to prepare their resources before the main weekend.

Choose Froakie For The Mega Greninja Path
During the Mega Finale event, Trainers can begin a branching Timed Research journey by choosing one of three Kalos starter Pokémon: Chespin, Fennekin, or Froakie. To work toward Mega Greninja, you need to select Froakie.
This choice matters because the free GO Pass: Mega Finale provides rewards based on the Pokémon you select. Choosing Froakie puts you on the path toward Mega Greninja and provides enough Mega Energy to Mega Evolve your chosen partner once.
Froakie is the first stage of the evolutionary family, followed by Frogadier and then Greninja. Make sure you have enough Froakie Candy for the normal evolution line.
How To Get Greninja
Before you can Mega Evolve anything, you need a regular Greninja. If you already have one, you can use it for the Mega Evolution process. Otherwise, catch Froakie and evolve it through its two stages.
The basic evolution path is:
- Froakie → Frogadier
- Frogadier → Greninja
You will need Candy for these evolutions, so catching extra Froakie during the event is useful. The Mega Finale event features Froakie, along with Chespin and Fennekin, across its rotating habitats, giving you additional opportunities to build your Candy supply.
Collect Greninja Mega Energy
The most important resource for Mega Greninja is Greninja Mega Energy. The first Mega Evolution costs 300 Mega Energy. After Greninja has been Mega Evolved, later Mega Evolutions can cost considerably less, with the current listed later cost being 60 Mega Energy.
During Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale, the free GO Pass provides enough Mega Energy for one Mega Evolution of your chosen Kalos starter. You can also earn Mega Energy through relevant research and Mega Raids when available.
Mega Energy is species-specific. In other words, Energy for another Pokémon cannot be substituted for Greninja Mega Energy.
Mega Evolve Greninja
Once you have Greninja and enough Mega Energy, open Greninja’s Pokémon summary page. If the Pokémon is eligible and you have the required Energy, the Mega Evolve button will appear.
Tap Mega Evolve and confirm the action. Your Greninja will temporarily transform into Mega Greninja. Mega Evolution is not permanent. A Mega-Evolved Pokémon normally remains in its Mega form for eight hours before returning to its regular form.
Mega Greninja is a Water/Dark-type Pokémon, making it especially useful when you want the benefits of a Mega Pokémon with those types.
Can You Mega Evolve Greninja Again?
Yes. After you Mega Evolve a specific Greninja, future Mega Evolutions become cheaper. You can also Mega Evolve that Pokémon again without spending Mega Energy after its resting period has ended.
Repeatedly Mega Evolving a Pokémon increases its Mega Level, unlocking additional benefits while it is Mega Evolved. This makes repeated use worthwhile beyond simply filling the Mega Pokédex.
Remember that each individual Pokémon requires Mega Energy for its first Mega Evolution, even if you have already Mega Evolved another Pokémon of the same species.
