What does it mean to lower ping in games?

Lowering ping in games is all about reducing the lag or delay between your computer and the game server and making the process faster for you. Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms) and represents how long it takes for a data signal to travel from your device to the server and back again. This is the core mechanic, and one has to deal with it when gaming. So, when you lower your ping from 150 ms to 20 ms, your actions and every move start getting smoother and better. It gives you a more responsive gaming experience with less frustration from delays and more, making it an important factor worthy of attention.

What happens when we lower the ping in games?

Lowering ping is a common way to make your gaming experience better, and it really makes your game feel much more responsive. When your ping drops, the swiftness of your actions on the mouse and on the screen can be noticed. This means your character moves exactly when you tell them to, and you will find less or no lag. You’ll experience less stuttering, fewer teleporting enemies, and less frustration when it comes to handling the moves. In a nutshell, we can say that lowering the ping can prove very beneficial in multiple respects. You can do this simply by following the ways in the next section.

Ways to lower ping in games

Here are the ways that you need to follow in order to lower ping in your games.

Go Wired with Ethernet

You can skip using Wi-Fi whenever possible. Rather, a direct Ethernet cable connection can effectively eliminate interference and provide a stable, low-latency link.

Close Background Programs

Shut down background apps that may be impacting the performance. Anything that stays parallel with your internet bandwidth will spike your ping.

Reboot Your Router & Modem

Sometimes, doing this also gives you an edge. It’s like a reboot, or rather a refresh step that will give you a fresh start. Power cycling your networking gear can clear memory leaks and help establish a better connection route.

Pick the Closest Servers to You

Data travel distance can also be an impactful matter. Always choose a game server that is apparently physically and geographically closest to your location.

Go for Selected Devices

Disconnect any devices that you won’t be using immediately. Fewer active devices mean more bandwidth is available for your game solely, and the network stays uninterrupted.

These are some ways you can follow in order to lower the ping for the games you play. This will give you efficient gameplay and a better experience.
