What are Deepfake Scams?

Deepfake scams are a modern type of fraud where criminals use artificial intelligence to alter or create highly realistic audio, video, or images. They are highly dangerous as they are so realistic. They use these tools to impersonate trusted people, like a family member, a CEO, or a public official, which makes other people trust them easily.

It can pretend to be anybody who would and can ask you for money, payment details, or other information that they need. They usually carry a sense of urgency, and it is highly important to act right. Because the voice and face match perfectly, it is incredibly easy to fall for. These scams weaponize our natural trust in what we see and hear, making it harder than ever to spot a lie.

Ways to Protect Yourself from Deepfake Scams

If you want to keep yourself guarded from Deepfake Scams, here are a few things you can take care of.

  • To begin, you need to keep your friends and family alert about these running scams that one needs to protect oneself from. If you ever receive an urgent, emotional call asking for money or sensitive information, try to keep your people informed about a code word or something personal that only they may know.
  • Don’t act in haste. Scammers love to create a false sense of urgency to make you panic and bypass critical thinking. To verify it better, try to hang up the phone and call the person back using a trusted number you have saved, not the one that just called you.
  • Pay close attention to small details during video calls. Look for odd blinking patterns, unnatural mouth movements when they speak, weird shifts on the screen, or blurry edges around facial features that would make one look AI-generated or fake.
  • You can also follow the familial pattern and implement strict verification protocols at work. Ask for identity verification before making a transfer.
  • Also, keep your social media profiles private and make sure you post about yourself carefully. Fraudsters use these public clips to clone your voice and map your facial features, which almost look similar.
  • Avoid downloading suspicious apps or clicking on unknown links that ask for permission to access your camera or microphone, as these can be used to harvest your biometric data. They can also be a phishing attempt.

This is what we can do to protect ourselves from Deepfake Scams.
