Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 17, and it’s clear the device is more than just a minor refresh. Positioned as the entry-level model in the new lineup, the iPhone 17 introduces a host of significant upgrades to its display, cameras, and internal specs. With the new, slimmer iPhone Air taking the place of the Plus model, the standard iPhone 17 solidifies its role as the accessible flagship, packed with new features that will be particularly appealing to users looking to upgrade from older models.

The new iPhone 17 will be available for preorder on Friday, September 12, with an official store launch a week later on September 19. Apple has maintained its aggressive pricing strategy for the entry-level model. The iPhone 17 will start at $799 for the 256GB version, which is the same starting price as its predecessor but with double the storage. A 512GB model will also be available for $999.

This pricing makes the iPhone 17 the most affordable option in Apple’s new family of devices, which includes the iPhone Air starting at $999, the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max starting at $1,199.

Design and Display Innovations

While the overall design remains largely consistent with its predecessor, the iPhone 17 features a few key refinements. The most noticeable change is the rearranged camera bump on the back. The lenses are now vertically aligned within a rectangular block that spans the phone’s width, a departure from the previous diagonal setup.

The display sees some of the most dramatic improvements. The screen size has been increased slightly to 6.3 inches (up from 6.1 inches). A major upgrade, previously reserved for the Pro models, is the inclusion of ProMotion, which allows the display to dynamically adjust its refresh rate from 120Hz down to 1Hz to conserve battery life. The screen is also protected by a new Ceramic Shield 2 layer for enhanced scratch and crack resistance.

In a bold move, the iPhone 17’s screen is now significantly brighter, maxing out at 3,000 nits. This is a massive leap from the 2,000 nits of the previous generation and will provide much better visibility in direct sunlight. The new model will be available in five new colors: lavender, light blue, a dark gray, silver-white, and green.

A Focus on Camera Performance

The iPhone 17 comes equipped with a dual-camera system on the back, but with some serious upgrades. Both the main and ultrawide cameras have been upgraded to 48 megapixels, a significant jump from the 12-megapixel ultrawide on the iPhone 16. Apple’s “dual fusion” technology allows the main camera to capture sharp, full-resolution photos or take 2x crop-zoomed images at 24 megapixels.

The front-facing camera also gets an upgrade to 18 megapixels and includes the Center Stage feature, which automatically centers the camera on you during video chats. This, combined with improved image stabilization, promises a better experience for FaceTime and video calls.

Core Specs and Software

Apple has maintained its strategy of differentiating its models by their internal specs. The iPhone 17 is powered by the new A19 chip, which is 20% faster than the A16 chip in the iPhone 16. While not as advanced as the A19 Pro chip in the Pro models and iPhone Air, the A19 is a formidable piece of silicon. Built on a 3-nanometer process, its 6-core CPU, improved neural engine, and updated 5-core GPU will provide faster performance for AI services and mobile gaming, especially with the addition of ProMotion.

The base storage has been doubled to 256GB, with a 512GB option also available. For those needing even more space, the iPhone 17 Pro Max now has a 2TB option. The new device will run on iOS 26, which introduces a host of new features including a “Liquid Glass” redesign, iMessage updates, and a streamlined Camera app.
