Microsoft creates a new AI engineering division to focus on developing advanced tools and technologies for AI applications. Microsoft has announced a new engineering division, CoreAI — Platform and Tools, aimed at advancing core AI technologies and tools. This division will focus on creating end-to-end AI solutions for internal use and external customers. The division will be led by Jay Parikh, a seasoned engineering leader who previously served as Meta’s global head of engineering.

In a memo to employees, CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the transformative impact of AI on software development. Nadella stated that 2025 would mark a significant shift, with AI models revolutionizing application categories. He compared this evolution to the simultaneous introduction of GUIs, internet servers, and cloud-native databases, emphasizing the compression of three decades of innovation into three years.

CoreAI’s Role and Leadership

The CoreAI division will consolidate Microsoft’s Developer Division, AI Platform, and select teams from the Office of the CTO. These teams include AI Supercomputing, AI Agentic Runtimes, and Engineering Thrive. The new division’s mission is to develop the AI stack for Copilot and other applications, catering to both first-party and third-party needs.

With Jay Parikh as its leader, Microsoft created a new AI engineering division named CoreAI – Platform and Tools. Jay Parikh, appointed as executive vice president of CoreAI, will oversee this division. Key leaders such as Eric Boyd (AI Platform), Jason Taylor (AI Infrastructure), Julia Liuson (Developer Division), and Tim Bozarth (Developer Infrastructure) will report to Parikh. Parikh will also collaborate with leaders across Microsoft, including Scott Guthrie (Cloud + AI), Rajesh Jha (Experiences + Devices), and Mustafa Suleyman (Consumer AI).

Focus on AI-First Development

To solidify its leadership in AI, Microsoft creates a new AI engineering division. Nadella described a future where AI-first applications dominate. These applications will feature memory, entitlements, and action spaces, enabling powerful AI capabilities. The company is reimagining how code is built, deployed, and maintained, moving toward “agentic” applications. This shift includes new user interfaces, AI runtimes, and enhanced management layers for AI-driven solutions.

Microsoft is committing significant resources to AI development. The company plans to spend $80 billion this fiscal year on data centers to support AI workloads. Its AI business is projected to achieve a $10 billion annual revenue run rate, reflecting its rapid growth.

Strengths of the CoreAI Division

Microsoft’s creation of the CoreAI division reflects its ambition to lead the AI transformation. By consolidating its AI Platform, Developer Division, and select Office of the CTO teams, the company is taking a structured approach to integrating AI into its ecosystem. This reorganization is likely to enhance efficiency and innovation across its products.

The leadership of Jay Parikh, an experienced engineer with a strong track record at Meta, adds credibility to the initiative. The collaboration between CoreAI and other Microsoft divisions, including Cloud + AI and Consumer AI, strengthens its ability to create cutting-edge AI solutions. The integration of tools like GitHub Copilot into the broader AI stack demonstrates Microsoft’s intent to provide seamless solutions for developers and businesses.

Global Leadership and Hiring

Parikh’s leadership is expected to accelerate Microsoft’s AI roadmap. He expressed enthusiasm for the team’s accomplishments and future goals. Microsoft is also expanding its workforce, seeking talented individuals who align with its vision for AI innovation.

The establishment of CoreAI underscores Microsoft’s commitment to leading the AI revolution. By integrating advanced tools, platforms, and infrastructure, the company aims to redefine how AI applications are developed and deployed, solidifying its position at the forefront of the industry.
