The Last of Us Online, Naughty Dog’s disastrous effort to bring the beloved property to the screen, has been shelved. According to the studio, this strategy would have had a significant negative influence on its capacity to create new single-player games as it would have required it to devote all of its resources to post-launch content for years to come. In a blog post on Thursday, the company provided an update on its multiplayer project and said that the choice ultimately came down to what keeping an online service game would imply for its currently under-development single-player games.
We understand that a lot of you have been waiting for updates on the project we’ve been referring to as The Last of Us Online. We’ve decided to halt the game’s development, which was a very tough choice to make.
The developer wanted to give some background on why it decided to halt work because it anticipated that members of the Last of Us Factions multiplayer community would be disappointed by the announcement. Naughty Dog stated,
“The multiplayer team has been working on this game since we were working on The Last of Us Part II – crafting an experience we felt was unique and had tremendous potential.” “The gameplay for The Last of Us Online became more polished and enjoyable, and we were excited about the direction in which we were heading as the multiplayer team refined their concept during this time.”
“As we increased production to full capacity, the enormous breadth of our goal became evident. Future single-player game development would be significantly impacted if we were to devote all of our studio resources to supporting post-launch content for years on end in order to release and sustain The Last of Us Online. We could either continue to concentrate on the single-player narrative games that have characterized Naughty Dog’s history or become a fully live service gaming firm.
The Challenges of The Last of Us Online
Naughty Dog continued by confirming that it is developing many ambitious brand-new single-player games. The studio, however, remained mum on what they are right now. According to reports from May, Naughty Dog was allegedly putting The Last of Us Online on hold because of an internal Bungie review. Naughty Dog allegedly saw a wave of layoffs in October, at which point the multiplayer project was “put on ice.”
Naughty Dog has now officially announced that it will not be developing the game going forward and will instead stick to the single-player strategy that has made it a mainstay among PlayStation first-party studios. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, the next PlayStation 5 title from Naughty Dog, is scheduled to launch on January 19, 2024.
