Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will launch commercial operations on December 25, easing the crush at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with 23 daily departures in the first phase. IndiGo’s flight from Bengaluru touches down first at 8 am, kicking off a rolling start with Akasa Air and Air India Express joining the lineup.
The greenfield airport, spread over 1,160 hectares, opens its single terminal built for 20 million passengers a year at a first-phase cost of Rs 19,646 crore. Adani Group’s Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), holding 74% stake with CIDCO owning the rest, picked Christmas for the quiet launch to iron out kinks smoothly. Peak-hour flights shift over early to cut congestion at the old airport, with NMIA running 8 am to 8 pm initially and up to 10 aircraft movements hourly. About 120 daily air traffic movements mark the start, ramping to 24/7 ops by February.
Phased Rollout Handles 20 Million Passengers Initially:
By 2029, phase one will have four runways and accommodate 90 million people, with a single runway and terminal. After January, NMIAL will have 34 daily departures that connect to 16 domestic locations, including Delhi, Goa, and Kochi, via IndiGo, Akasa, and Air India Express.
Jeet Adani, Director at Adani Airports Holdings Ltd, called the December 25 date a low-load pick for hassle-free teething. The airport handles 30 flights daily at launch—eight per hour—before hitting 24-30 by February, with 200 stores inside. Star Air jumps in as the first regional carrier December 25, flying Embraer 175s to Ahmedabad, Goa, Bengaluru, and Nanded, some with stops. Fares start at Rs 3,600, targeting tier-2 links. Automated People Mover tunnels connect terminals underground, routing bags smartly after check-in anywhere. Multi-modal ties—road, rail, water—boost access for Mumbai’s exploding air traffic.
Adani’s Rs 19,646 Crore Bet on Mumbai’s Second Gateway:
PM Narendra Modi inaugurated phase one October 8 after DGCA aerodrome license September 30. Construction kicked August 2021 post-land handovers, hitting 57% completion by late 2023 despite delays.
Adani eyes heavy capex to double capacity fast, making Mumbai India’s first dual-airport city. Cargo starts at 0.5 million tonnes yearly, with zones for perishables and express parcels. Akasa Air maps 300 domestic and 50 international weekly flights by FY2027. Air India Express slots 20 daily to 15 spots. IndiGo leads inaugural arrival and departure post-dress rehearsals. The site dwarfs CSMIA in size, built for all aircraft types. Digital backbone promises online check-ins, smart baggage, and fluid flows, positioning NMIA as a global multi-airport player.
Christmas Launch Eases Mumbai Air Squeeze:
The main airport in Mumbai is overcrowded, causing delays on all routes. Peak shifts are immediately absorbed by NMIA, creating room for expansion in the metro area. Christmas timing allows operations to sleep in peacefully by avoiding the holiday rush. Twelve-hour days manage twenty-three departures from December 25 to January 31; evenings and internationals are unlocked in February.Bookers need to confirm that the passenger code is NMI rather than BOM. As ramps and terminals synchronize, airlines push 120 ATMs a day early, building to full throttle. By combining Maharashtra’s CIDCO land play with the PPP model, the deployment strengthens Adani’s airport empire. For travelers, it means new routes, shorter lines, and respite from Mumbai’s constant traffic jams.
