Reports suggest that OpenAI is developing proprietary AI chipsets in collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) using the A16 Angstrom process. This chipset will utilize TSMC’s advanced A16 Angstrom process, which has yet to enter mass production. The A16 Angstrom process is designed to enhance speed and efficiency, making it an attractive choice for companies focusing on AI and machine learning capabilities.

Interestingly, Apple has also placed orders with TSMC for the same A16 Angstrom chipsets, reportedly for use in future iPhone models. The choice by both OpenAI and Apple to utilize this cutting-edge chipset technology suggests a potential collaboration between the two companies. This partnership is believed to focus on integrating advanced AI features into Apple’s devices, including capabilities from OpenAI’s ongoing project, Sora.

According to sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI has requested TSMC to produce A16 Angstrom chipsets specifically tailored for its AI systems. While TSMC will handle the fabrication, OpenAI will customize the chipset to suit its high-performance AI applications. This move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to develop in-house hardware solutions that can effectively support its resource-intensive AI models.

Sora: The Generative Video Model

One of the key projects driving OpenAI’s demand for the A16 Angstrom chipset is Sora, a generative video model currently in development. OpenAI is developing proprietary AI chipsets to optimize the performance of its AI models, such as the upcoming generative video model, Sora. Sora aims to enhance video generation capabilities, requiring significant computational power and efficiency. The new chipset is expected to boost Sora’s performance, optimizing it for potential integration with Apple’s devices. However, OpenAI has not yet announced when Sora will be publicly available.

Reports from industry insiders suggest that OpenAI’s decision to adopt the A16 Angstrom process may be linked to a broader strategic partnership with Apple. By using the same chipset, both companies could achieve better optimization and easier deployment of AI features across Apple’s hardware. This collaboration could potentially enhance the user experience on Apple devices, driving higher sales and customer engagement.

Canceled Plans for a Dedicated Chip Foundry

Initially, OpenAI was in discussions with TSMC about establishing a dedicated foundry for its custom chip development. However, after evaluating various factors, including profitability and logistical challenges, the plan was ultimately abandoned. Despite this setback, OpenAI remains focused on leveraging TSMC’s advanced manufacturing capabilities to produce its custom AI chipsets.

The A16 Angstrom process represents a significant advancement in semiconductor technology. Compared to the next-generation N2P process, A16 offers an 8-10 percent speed increase at the same operating voltage and up to a 20 percent reduction in power consumption. Additionally, the process has a 110 percent increase in density, making it ideal for high-performance AI applications.

The Challenges

Now that OpenAI is developing proprietary AI chipsets, industry analysts believe the company is positioning itself for long-term technological independence.  While the A16 Angstrom process is not expected to enter mass production until 2026, the potential benefits make the wait worthwhile. OpenAI’s partnership with TSMC and possible collaboration with Apple could position the company at the forefront of AI innovation. However, the competitive landscape remains challenging, with other tech giants also developing custom solutions to maintain their market positions.

OpenAI’s pursuit of custom AI chipsets signifies a strategic shift towards developing proprietary hardware solutions. The collaboration with TSMC and potential partnership with Apple could provide a competitive edge, enabling OpenAI to enhance its AI capabilities and market presence.

In a separate development, Apple and Nvidia are reportedly interested in investing in OpenAI as part of a new funding round. This investment could significantly increase OpenAI’s market valuation, potentially exceeding $100 billion. The funding could provide a financial boost to OpenAI as it continues to develop its proprietary AI solutions and expand its market presence.
