The era of advertisement-free chatbots powered by artificial intelligence might soon come to a close. There have been several reports that OpenAI has started the process of adding advertisements to ChatGPT. This will commence with a trial for employees.
According to a statement by journalist Alex Heath, the CEO of Applications for Open AI, Fidji Simo, recently told employees about the company’s experimentation with advertisements within an internal version of ChatGPT for employees only. While it appears what they are doing, many questions still linger, namely the timeline for general ad announcements and what levels of service are impacted.
The beta testing is OpenAI’s first major endeavor towards monetizing ChatGPT through advertisements. Nonetheless, it has not made a public statement about a possible deployment time for this advertising to be officially available for public use.
There is no information from OpenAI about whether advertisements would be viewed simultaneously with premium offerings for paid subscribers.
The subscription-oriented industry is also a fascinating segment. Currently, OpenAI is providing subscription services in different tiers.
These start with its Go plan that is priced under $5 in some geographies and is also free. The Plus plan is its medium subscription service, while it also has its Pro plan.
It is likely that the paid plans like Plus and Pro will remain free from ads or remain ad-free. On the other hand, it is likely that Go, with its low-cost plan, may have ads in the future.
OpenAI Explores Advertising Models for ChatGPT: From Sidebars to Controversial Response Integration
Some previous reports from The Information, which came out in the days leading up to the holidays, provided a little insight into how the advertisements for ChatGPT could work. The most controversial model would be to give the AI the preference for the information in the advertisements in its responses to questions.

As per sources who have viewed the mock-up, OpenAI is also contemplating a more traditional approach to ads whereby the company would showcase the ads in a sidebar zone alongside the main response box of the ChatGPT AI program, thus making the ads look almost conventional to those who have used online ads previously.
When asked about these intentions, OpenAI replied it was indeed exploring ways to display ads but provided very few details. “As ChatGPT becomes even more capable and widely used, we’re looking at ways to continue offering even more intelligence to everyone,” a spokesperson for OpenAI told ‘The Information’ when asked about these intentions.
Navigating Data, Objectivity, and User Experience
As a part of this, we’ve considered what ads might look like in our own product. There’s a trusted relationship that users have with ChatGPT, and any solution will take that into account.
This trust is essential. The reputation of the ChatGPT AI is built on providing useful, unbiased results. The use of advertising, particularly advertising that could sway the AI’s responses, could jeopardize this.
OpenAI finds itself in what is almost a balancing act. It is clear that OpenAI indeed has access to all the requisite data to provide personalized and target-based advertising. ChatGPT is well-aware of what its users are searching for, what problems they are attempting to solve, and what interests them. All this is very useful information for any advertisers.
However, not all attempts may bear fruit. Perplexity, another AI search firm, has already tested the waters with advertising and, reportedly, does not find it gaining significant traction as yet.
The new AI advertising paradigm is untested, and user reluctance may turn out to be quite strong if they find these ads clouding the quality and objectivity of these AI experiences.
There is also consideration regarding whether consumers will be amenable to advertisements in a service that has had a no-advertisements, high-end experience up to this point. This has been a tool to which a large number of consumers have become accustomed in a distraction-free, advertisement-less experience.
A New Chapter for ChatGPT, Balancing User Experience with Bottom-Line Reality
For now, there will be no impact for those who have been using ChatGPT. The testing phase for employee use will most probably aid in getting proper feedback from them. When there is an increase in ads, it is most likely that it will begin with smaller subscriptions, like free subscriptions.
This is a harbinger of the overall situation, which is AI firms need to have sustainable models.
ChatGPT is costly to run, and though it does generate money through memberships, advertising also appears to offer another avenue which may make it amenable to all sections of society.
Whether this tradeoff is something that will be accepted by users is yet to be seen.
