Reddit has officially surpassed X (formerly Twitter) to become the fifth most popular social media platform in the UK, according to Ofcom’s latest report. In May 2024, 22.9 million UK adults visited Reddit, narrowly edging out X’s 22.1 million users. This marks a significant achievement for Reddit, which has earned a reputation for its community-driven discussions and specialized forums known as subreddits.
Key Drivers Behind Reddit’s Rapid Growth
Reddit’s rise can be attributed to a combination of strategic adjustments and shifts in the digital ecosystem. One major factor is Google’s 2024 algorithm update, which improved Reddit’s visibility in search results. This update has been crucial in driving more organic traffic to the platform, making it more accessible to users seeking specialized content.
Farhad Divecha, managing director of AccuraCast, a UK-based digital marketing agency, noted that the algorithm boost has played a pivotal role in Reddit’s growth. “Google’s latest algorithm update in early 2024 gave Reddit a significant boost in organic search traffic. That’s probably been a big factor,” Divecha said.
The result has been a remarkable 47% year-on-year growth in Reddit’s UK user base, making it the fastest-growing major social media platform in the country. This surge has propelled Reddit past LinkedIn and X, with YouTube now leading the rankings, having surpassed Facebook with over 44 million UK adult users.
Reddit’s Community-Centric Appeal
Reddit’s structure plays a significant role in its popularity. The platform’s emphasis on niche, topic-specific forums creates an environment where users, known as “Redditors,” engage in highly focused discussions. Unlike generalist platforms like Facebook or Twitter, Reddit thrives on a sense of community and shared interests, which appeals to users looking for specialized content. This has allowed Reddit to carve out a unique space in the crowded social media market.
Additionally, changes in how third-party apps access Reddit content may have also contributed to increased traffic. Users who were previously reliant on third-party apps were forced to switch to Reddit’s official site, further boosting site visits. Reddit’s IPO in March 2024 also brought significant attention to the platform, attracting new users and further solidifying its position in the UK market.
X Faces Declining Popularity and Rising Competition
While Reddit has been on the rise, X has been facing a period of decline. Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and its rebranding to X in 2022, the platform has struggled to retain users. Ofcom’s report revealed an 8% drop in X’s UK user base compared to May 2023, indicating a loss of traction.
The decline is partly due to X’s controversial content moderation policies under Musk’s leadership, which many users feel have led to a less trustworthy environment. Furthermore, X now faces stiff competition from newer platforms such as Threads, launched by Meta in July 2023 as a microblogging alternative. Threads has attracted users disillusioned with X, particularly as Musk’s platform has become associated with divisive political content following the election of Donald Trump. According to Forbes, X has seen a 30% drop in user engagement between 2023 and 2024.
Misinformation and AI Concerns in the Digital Space
Ofcom’s report also delved into broader trends within the UK’s digital landscape, highlighting concerns around misinformation and the impact of artificial intelligence. The survey found that four in ten UK adults had encountered misinformation or deepfakes online, with many expressing skepticism about digital content’s authenticity. A growing number of people also struggle to distinguish AI-generated images, audio, and video from genuine content, with one-third of respondents admitting a lack of confidence in identifying AI-created media.
These findings underscore the increasing need for digital literacy and accountability, especially as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent and harder to differentiate from real-world media.
At the top of the social media rankings in the UK, YouTube remains the undisputed leader, surpassing Facebook with over 44 million adult users. Video content continues to dominate, cementing YouTube’s position as the go-to platform for entertainment and information.
