When discussing foldable phones, most people will probably immediately associate the topic with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup. But now Huawei has only released a bomb with the Mate XT, which has been released recently.
The Big Reveal: Huawei Mate Xt
In fact, only last week, following the craze over the iPhone 16, Huawei felt that this was the best time to stage an intervention.
How?
Having shown the audience the tri-fold smartphone Mate XT, which is the world’s first. This phone folds not only once but twice!
All in all, its price ranges closer to $2,819 for the Mate XT. That is not a small change you are holding there. Nonetheless, about 3.9 million people are interested in the phone. And sure, do not most of them cannot afford to pay for one, this device has captured the attention of everyone out there.
Foldable Phones: The Clash of Titans
For many years now, Samsung has taken the throne of foldable phones and their Galaxy Z Fold 6 is not something to take lightly. And that’s when the new Huawei Mate XT enters the scene and instantly makes the Galaxy Z Fold 6 feel like your grandpa’s flip phone.
I think it is time to discuss the concept of the design. Overall, the thickness of the Mate XT is just slightly more than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Samsung’s foldable is 12.1mm thick and Huawei’s tri-fold kind is 12.8 mm thick. And so, not much of a difference there, right? When viewed directly, the Mate XT is very futuristic-looking and slim, whereas the Z Fold 6 gives off somewhat of a dated ‘flip phone’ look.
Samsung’s Stagnancy: Falling Behind?
This is where it gets a bit complicated for Samsung. Huawei just woke up one day and decided to offer a phone that not only folds but tri-folds as well. This has put Samsung in a slightly awkward position.
In fact, it is completely unfair to complain about the Galaxy Z Fold 6, as it is not flawed in any way. It remains a good phone but the challenge is that it is not trying to revolutionize anything in the market. A little disappointment has set in due to Samsung’s incremental releases across their product line. People expect not just a new model with a thinner profile or a better camera, but a whole lot more than that.
And that’s where Huawei is really applying pressure, challengers included. The Mate XT isn’t just about the extra fold; it’s about innovation. It also seems like Samsung’s foldable phones are getting too familiar, while Huawei is constantly challenging the possibilities of foldable phones.
Huawei’s Game-Changing Moment
Though, the Mate XT is not the first foldable phone that was ever made by Huawei. Even before this the company was already causing ripples in the tech niche with the Huawei Mate X2. Other companies such as OnePlus and Honor have also been gradually approaching Samsung, gradually taking away its market share in the segment of foldable phones.
And of course, let’s not forget that Samsung is still trying to catch up in the design aspect. There is information that the company is developing a thinner foldable phone and a device with a camera with a resolution of 200 MP. But here’s the catch: But it could just be limited to South Korea and China which are the locations that were mentioned.
What’s Next for Samsung?
Huawei along with other competitors following is a huge threat for Samsung, if Samsung wants to sustain on the apex of the foldable phones it has to work hard. If they are to remain in business and more so in the growing Chinese market, they will have to unleash some more technology from their labs.
