Samsung has officially rolled out the beta version of One UI 8.5, beginning December 8, 2025, and early testers on the Galaxy S25 series are already getting a look at the company’s next major interface overhaul. While this isn’t a full generational redesign, One UI 8.5 introduces a broad set of visual and functional improvements, refining both the aesthetic direction and everyday usability of Samsung’s software. The update blends new customization options, smoother animations, updated system apps, and a noticeably transformed design language, one that many users believe reflects the “Liquid Glass” trend made popular by iOS 26.

A Clear Shift in Design Philosophy

Floating Elements and Translucent Surfaces

One of the first things early adopters have pointed out is how the interface appears more elevated and layered. Samsung has added floating components to several system apps, including Settings, Gallery, and My Files. Buttons now detach from the background, often appearing as circular or pill-shaped islands that hover slightly above lightly blurred surfaces. This is a major change from the flat, grounded panels found in previous One UI versions.

These translucent layers, along with soft gradient backdrops, create a look that nods to the “Liquid Glass” aesthetic but Samsung applies it more subtly. Instead of intense reflections or exaggerated lighting, the company opts for modest blurring and depth effects that don’t compromise readability.

Revised Navigation & New Layout Choices

The Settings app, for instance, now positions its search bar at the bottom making it easier to reach on large screens while the back button floats independently in the top-left corner. Scrolling through menus reveals faint fade effects at the top and bottom edges, giving the impression that content is sitting beneath a thin frosted layer. These adjustments make the interface feel smoother and lighter, giving more breathing room between elements.

Depth-Enhanced Icons

Samsung is also refreshing core icons with a mild, 3D-like effect. The icons lift off the wallpaper with subtle shadows and contouring, making them more tactile. They’re not aggressively three-dimensional, but they do aim to create a deeper and more modern visual environment especially in contrast-themed wallpapers, where the raised design becomes more noticeable.

System Apps Receive Consistent Visual Updates

Almost all major Samsung apps have been touched by the new design direction. Apps like Calculator, Clock, Gallery, and Phone gain cleaner interfaces, reorganized layouts, and more floating action components. My Files, besides cosmetic changes, introduces new tools such as “Storage Share” for cross-device access.

The Quick Panel, a place for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness, and other controls undergoes one of its biggest upgrades in years. It can now be reorganized with far more freedom, including resizing toggles and shifting layouts. Combined with the new blur layers, the Quick Panel feels more personalized and visually refined.

Even the lock screen gets some subtle but important updates. Notification bubbles adopt a softer, glass-like backdrop, and new clock styles incorporate layered transparency.

Beyond Appearance: Useful Improvements Under the Hood

Although One UI 8.5 is receiving attention for its design evolution, Samsung isn’t limiting the update to surface-level changes. Several practical enhancements have been added across the system:

  • Advanced Quick Panel customization, allowing users to redesign their fast-access controls more flexibly.
  • Enhanced cross-device file access, especially through the new “Storage Share” feature in My Files, improving integration across Samsung phones, tablets, TVs, and PCs.
  • Stronger security features, including a new Theft Protection option that automatically locks the device after suspicious failed unlock attempts.
  • Refined power management, giving clearer breakdowns of battery usage and system activity.
  • Smoother animations, richer transitions, and cleaner gestures throughout the interface.

These additions reinforce the idea that One UI 8.5 is designed not just to look modern but to function more intelligently.

Liquid Glass Influence With Samsung’s Own Identity

While the influence of Liquid Glass is noticeable, it’s equally clear that Samsung is applying its own interpretation. The company avoids excessive reflections or overly glossy layers, choosing instead a calmer approach that maintains clarity and customization areas where Samsung traditionally differentiates itself from iOS.

Early beta users have noted some inconsistencies across apps, but this is expected. As development continues, Samsung is likely to smooth out visual mismatches or introduce toggles to let users choose how “glassy” they want their interface to be.

Rollout Timeline & Device Availability

The beta of One UI 8.5 is currently limited to Galaxy S25 series owners in select countries, with broader availability expected in early 2026. A wide release will likely coincide with the launch of the Galaxy S26 lineup, after which older flagship models should begin receiving the update.

From floating UI components to depth-based icons and refreshed system apps, One UI 8.5 signals a meaningful shift in Samsung’s design ambitions. It steps away from older flat elements and embraces layered transparency, subtle shadows, and a gentler overall visual flow. Combined with practical upgrades in sharing, security, and customization, this update positions Samsung’s software as more elegant, more dynamic, and better aligned with contemporary UI trends without losing the flexibility that Galaxy users expect.
