Samsung is reportedly working on in-display camera technology. This technology will make smartphones completely bezel-less. Notches will also be eliminated.
In AMOLED Forum held on last week (in Shenzhen, China), Samsung showed its product roadmap.
At event, Samsung showed FoD (Fingerprint on Display) for in-display fingerprint scanners, SoD (Sound on Display) for screen sound technology, HoD (Haptic on Display) for in-display haptic feedback, UPS (Under Panel Sensor). With the help of HoD and UPS, front camera and other facial recognition sensors will work in spite of being underneath the display.
This year, many Smartphone Manufacturers tried to reduce bezel as much as possible. Some manufacturers increased the screen to body ratio by implementing Notch at the top of smartphones.
Some smartphones manufacturers went a step ahead and removed the Notch. However, they had to put front camera and sensors somewhere, so they used sliding mechanism and put front camera on the slider.
The sliding mechanism is not a perfect solution for Notch issue, as movable parts inside smartphone might fail after a fixed time. Also, not all people like movable cameras.
UPS can become a game-changer in the smartphone industry. It can make the dream of Notch-less bezel-less display true, that too without any sliding camera mechanism.
We need to wait for Samsung to put these technologies on any commercial product to check how this turns out.
