Square Enix recently released a Group Customer Harassment Policy to protect employees and partners of the company from harassment by enthusiastic fans. It comes after the rise of the harassment trend in the gaming community where some passionate fan interactions turn to aggression against the developers, voice actors, and other employees.
Square Enix is the company behind the famous Final Fantasy series. It is very much aware of the fact that the opinion of its communities is very essential in developing its products. The problem is that such feedback often comes with harassment. This type of behavior not only ruins the morale of the employees but also disturbs other customers.
It specifically declares that harassment is not acceptable, and appropriate action will be taken against such offenders, up to and including bans from services or even further measures such as litigation.
Protecting Employees from Harassment and Workplace Toxicity
Under the new policy, harassment encompasses a range of behaviors including:
- Violence and Intimidation: Any threats or acts of violence directed at employees.
- Defamation and Personal Attacks: Spreading false information or making derogatory remarks about individuals.
- Coercion and abusive language: the use of aggressive language or tactics to coerce or intimidate employees.
- Stalking and violation of privacy: repeated unwanted contact or invasion of personal privacy.
- Sexual harassment: any form of unwelcome sexual advances or comments.
The policy also includes unreasonable customer demands; these are characteristically multiple in-game compensations or unban requests that are above socially acceptable levels. This policy appears to be a proactive measure after several incidents where Square Enix employees received extreme backlash.
For example, Naoki Yoshida, the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV, has talked about how abusive messages can affect developers who try to create fun experiences for players.
Square Enix Cracks Down on Toxic Fan Behavior
In 2022, he pointed out that such negativity may lead to de-motivation of the staff and, consequently, influence the quality of the game. The voice actor, Sena Bryer, also reported receiving transphobic threats from fans after her role in the game. Such incidences showcase how toxic fan interactions can be, making it even more imperative to have safeguards in place within the industry.
Square Enix policy states that action taken against harassers would be different based on the intensity of their harassment. The company could:
- In-game bans: Remove them from playing online games for a specified time or permanently.
- Service denial: Refuse to provide customer support to them.
- Legal action: In serious and malicious cases, Square Enix can engage law enforcement to protect its employees.
The company emphasizes that while it values customer feedback, there is a clear line between constructive criticism and harassment. The new policy aims to foster a safer environment for both employees and fans alike.
The policies of Square Enix enable video game companies to be ready for the inescapable complexities that surround fan interactions as their digital presence grows. They protect employees, but at the same time promote a healthier atmosphere in the community where feedback is shared constructively without the possibility of abuse.
The move by Square Enix to take action against harassment is an example of the larger trend within the industry toward prioritizing the well-being of those who create beloved games and addressing toxic behaviors among fans.
