The Model Y is selling at a much faster pace than one would expect in the Golden State, California. Last year the vehicle sales were 60,394 units. The numbers alongside Tesla selling 53,572 units of Model 3. In California, the best-selling vehicle is the Toyota Camry which had sales of  61,599 units. Thus making the Model Y second best selling vehicle, an impressive number as the vehicle was launched into the market two years ago.

Back in Q1 2021 earnings call Elon Musk stated that the Model Y would be the world’s best-selling vehicle. While the overall sales are already known to be impressive the sales in California are much larger than expected. Tesla’s annual vehicle production output is still just a fraction of what traditional automakers could accomplish regularly.
The numbers in California come out as published by California New Car Dealers Association’s new report. The Model Y sales were just 1,200 units behind the best-selling vehicle Toyota Camry. This is quite an accomplishment, considering that the Golden State is the US’ largest auto market.

Competition
This meant that within the short span of time since it became available, the Model Y saw so much demand and momentum that it effectively leapfrogged its competition, including its own sibling, the Model 3. Also, the fact that the all-electric crossover came within striking distance of the Toyota Camry is quite insane. Especially since the Model Y is being sold practically with no advertisements, and it is almost twice the price of the ubiquitous family sedan.
The Model Y’s astonishing growth is frightening for established automakers that are just starting to enter the electric vehicle market. Due to the federal tax credit program’s expiration, Tesla can no longer claim it. It’s clear that Tesla was able to benefit from the success of the Model Y due to its own merits. As a result, the company is now California’s fifth most popular vehicle. The Tesla Model Y is the company’s most conservative vehicle. While it doesn’t offer the same level of tech as its larger sibling, the Model X, it still manages to make a compelling combination for most average car buyers.Â
Additionally, as more electric vehicles are entering into the market like Lucid, Rivian, Ford, and GM, they have cars in the premium segment competition Tesla. New companies seem to be having trouble with the production rate and other semiconductor issues. However, the car sales this year are expected to have more than just Tesla vehicles from EVs in the best selling EVs.
