Testing a New “Branch from Here” Option in the ChatGPT Web App

OpenAI is seemingly beta-testing inprivate a game-changing ChatGPT functionality which would enable more flexible and efficient handling of intricate workflows in conversation. A new “Branch from here” utility was last observed in use last month by user Tibor Blaho, whose screenshots were shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The feature appears directly in the response menu next to such familiar choices as thumbs up, thumbs down, copy, and share buttons. From what Blaho found, “Branch from here” is intended to enable users to branch off a response into a completely separate conversation thread while leaving the original in its state. That would enable individuals to pursue a variety of directions for their AI conversations without having their prior work lost.

What’s especially interesting is how the interface treats the branching. Blaho observed that the system seems to add labels such as “Branched from {conversationTitle}” so users can track where their new chat threads branched out from. That thoughtful design flourish implies OpenAI has given some serious thought to making the feature easy to use and tidy.

ChatGPT Conversation Branching, A Game-Changer for Complex Workflows

As soon as screenshots started circulating, some users first wondered if it was perhaps a simple user interface tweak or something entirely different. But Blaho clarified that the branch feature continues to generate completely new conversation threads rather than edit pre-existing text. That is a key differentiation because it means users are able to support multiple conversation paths simultaneously.

Currently, anyone wanting to explore different ideas within the same ChatGPT discussion has to resort to workarounds like copying and pasting prompts into new conversations. For people working on complex projects or brainstorming sessions, this process quickly becomes cumbersome and disorganized.

The branchability feature might address this issue in a beautiful manner by allowing users to branch conversations at any given moment while still keeping track of their original discussion’s context and history. Picture having a creative writing project where you’d like to branch out in several directions in a story, or debugging a technical issue where you’d like to test several solutions’ branchability in conversations, might make both scenarios a lot easier.

This feature comes at a moment when more professionals and creatives are adopting AI tools as part of advanced workflows. Researchers, developers, consultants, and content creators frequently handle several related ideas or strategies within a project. Today’s limitation in linear discourse is restrictive when you are attempting at several angles or trying out several hypotheses.

With conversation branching, users would be able to sustain an overriding thread while branched-off experimental topics were explored and come back later to their main conversation informed by what they had explored. That would make ChatGPT considerably more effective for iterative work and hard problems.

Is ChatGPT The Next Evolution in User Experience?

Of course, you would also do well to note that OpenAI is continually testing features which are not released for public consumption. The company is continually testing features with tools and user interface tweaks, and not all such features are released beyond testing. But this particular feature seems to fulfill a legitimate user need and would in fact have real utility for how people are using AI assistants.

That OpenAI is paying attention even to user experience minutiae like a labeling system for branched conversation implies it’s not viewing this as a momentary experiment; it’s taking it seriously.

As OpenAI road-tests those smaller but possibly significant tweaks, the company is tinkering with larger developments as well. Its CEO, Sam Altman, just hinted at GPT-6 coming sooner rather than later. At a recent event in San Francisco, Altman referred to the next model as more dynamic, with features allowing it to learn user habits and favorites in order for it to provide a more customized experience.

Whether or not the branch feature is included in the final ChatGPT product remains unknown for now, but it is a prime example of judicious fine-tuning which would make an AI assistant a great deal more practical in daily life. Until such a time, enthusiasts are simply holding their breath for this very interesting utility in its test status.
