USA Cancels 2,000 Indian Visa Applications Due to Fraudulent Activities

About 2,000 visa appointments scheduled by Indian applicants have been canceled by the US Embassy in India as part of a major crackdown on fraudulent operations. The revelation of extensive abuse of the appointment scheduling system, including the use of bots to reserve spaces outside official guidelines, led to the cancellations. The embassy has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy against fraud and suspended the related accounts’ scheduling capabilities. Growing worries about visa fraud and its effects on legitimate applicants are highlighted by this development.

The crackdown comes amid heightened scrutiny of visa applications by US authorities as part of broader efforts to curb illegal immigration and fraudulent practices. The embassy’s investigation uncovered a network of agents and individuals involved in deceptive activities, prompting immediate action to safeguard the integrity of the visa process.

Discovery of Fraudulent Activities:

The US Embassy completed an internal inquiry from May to August 2024, which revealed the fraudulent acts. In order to obtain visa appointments, “bad actors” who used bots to manipulate the scheduling system were discovered by Consular Team India. Official policies were broken by these bots, which denied legitimate applicants the chance to fairly book their appointments.

The inquiry turned up links to a network of more than 30 agents working in Punjab and Haryana, among other states. It was discovered that these agents had submitted fake documents—such as phony bank statements, diplomas, and work records—in order to help their clients get their visas approved. In order to arrange these false documents, some agents demanded outrageous costs that ranged from ₹1 lakh to ₹15 lakh.

The embassy flagged 21 specific cases where applicants conspired with agents to submit false information. These deceptive practices not only undermined the credibility of the visa process but also posed risks to national security. As a result, the US Embassy took swift action by canceling the fraudulent appointments and suspending associated accounts.

Impact on Visa Applicants:

The cancellation of 2,000 visa appointments has raised concerns among legitimate applicants who may face delays or additional scrutiny due to these fraudulent activities. B1 and B2 visas, which are meant for business and tourism purposes, have already been experiencing significant backlogs in recent years. Waiting times for these visas ranged from 800 to 1,000 days in 2022-23, prompting many Indian applicants to seek appointments in alternative locations like Frankfurt and Bangkok.

Student visa denials have also surged, adding to the challenges faced by Indian applicants. In FY 2023-24, the US received 6.79 lakh applications for F-1 student visas but rejected 2.79 lakh of them—a rejection rate of 41%. This marks a sharp increase from previous years and reflects stricter scrutiny by US authorities. Reports suggest that Indian students faced a 38% drop in student visas issued during the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

While these measures aim to ensure fairness and security in the visa process, they also highlight the need for applicants to adhere strictly to guidelines and avoid engaging with fraudulent agents.

Conclusion:

The cancellation of 2,000 fraudulent visa appointments by the US Embassy underscores the importance of integrity in international travel processes. While these actions aim to protect genuine applicants and national security, they also serve as a reminder for individuals to exercise caution when navigating visa procedures. Collaborative efforts between US and Indian authorities are crucial in addressing fraud effectively and preserving trust in diplomatic relations.

As both nations work toward enhancing security measures, legitimate applicants must ensure compliance with guidelines while avoiding engagement with unauthorized agents or deceptive practices. The crackdown serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders involved in international mobility processes, highlighting the need for vigilance and accountability at every step.
