Albinder Dhindsa steps up as the new CEO of Eternal, Zomato’s parent company, after Deepinder Goyal’s resignation effective February 1. Best known as co-founder and CEO of Blinkit, formerly Grofers, Dhindsa brings deep roots in quick-commerce to the top job. His rise marks a pivot toward hyperlocal delivery as a core driver in India’s on-demand scene.

From Patiala Roots to Global Education:

Dhindsa, who was born in Patiala, Punjab, established his foundation by studying engineering at IIT Delhi. With an MBA from Columbia commercial School in the US, he later enhanced his business sense by combining strategic expertise with technological know-how. His foray into hyperlocal logistics was fuelled by this combination, and he saw early opportunities in India’s thriving urban marketplaces. His career path led him to entrepreneurship, where opportunity and perseverance met. Dhindsa’s journey from the countryside of Punjab to the halls of Ivy League universities recalls the experiences of many Indian entrepreneurs who pursue ambitious ideas overseas before returning home. In a field full with extravagant degrees that are put to the test through practical application, this strong foundation makes him stand out.

Launching Grofers and Blinkit Revolution:

Dhindsa teamed with Saurabh Kumar in 2013 to start Grofers, kicking off as a simple hyperlocal service linking neighborhood stores to doorsteps. It quickly grew into a full online grocery powerhouse, tapping rising demand for doorstep essentials. By 2021, the pivot to Blinkit nailed the 10-minute delivery promise, flipping consumer habits overnight. Dark stores and micro-fulfillment centers sprouted across cities, powering ultra-fast drops of groceries and daily needs. Blinkit’s model crushed rivals by obsessing over speed and scale, turning quick-commerce into a must-have. Dhindsa steered through cutthroat competition, proving logistics muscle in India’s chaotic streets. In 2022, Zomato acquired Blinkit for $568 million in an all-stock transaction, bringing it into the family. Everyone was put to the test during the merger, and Goyal once considered changing the leadership due to integration issues. However, Dhindsa persisted, encouraging expansion that turned Blinkit into a gem in Eternal’s crown.

Taking Eternal Helm Amid Leadership Shift:

Dhindsa is now in charge of Eternal’s whole portfolio, which includes groceries, cloud kitchens, and Zomato’s staple food delivery service. Similar to Blinkit’s rise as a leading value driver, quick-commerce plays a significant role in the mix. His hiring highlights Hyperlocal’s star turn in group strategy, where everyday life is transformed by 10-minute magic. When Goyal leaves, Dhindsa takes over at a crucial juncture, combining food and instant items under one roof. The Blinkit blend’s operational adjustments increased attention to customer pull and efficiency. Dhindsa is well-positioned to navigate regulatory winds and competitor pushes because to his experience with network construction and tech rollout. In order to incorporate family into the company’s operations, Dhindsa marries Akriti Chopra, a former CPO and co-founder of Zomato. This change highlights how founders in India’s tech boom pass the torch while placing bets on knowledgeable insiders.

Vision Shaping India’s Delivery Future:

Using Blinkit’s speed model for wider plays, Dhindsa, at the top of Eternal, aims for unified growth across verticals. With the rise of smartphones and urban hustle, quick necessities are gaining appeal, but food delivery remains king. Tight operations amid profitability chases are promised by his hands-on, customer-first manner. Razor-thin margins, rider discontent, and policy obstacles are all obstacles. However, Blinkit’s strategy provides indications: dense networks, data intelligence, constant adjustments. As digital India’s backbone, where every minute matters, Dhindsa takes over as quick-commerce cement. He is seen by industry observers as the ideal candidate for growth, combining founder fervor with track records of success. In order to pursue a future in which a single app manages everything from meals to midnight snacks, Eternal’s next chapter depends on knitting services smoothly. India’s delivery dominance is embodied by Dhindsa’s path from Grofers garage to CEO suite.
