The federal government stated on March 21 that the authority would also possess other abilities. They would be able to force an internet industry code on uncooperative media. These structured laws are mainly in response to a report from ACMA. The report specifies how four-fifths of the adults in Australia had faced misinformation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, 76% of them were of the opinion that platforms online should do more to cut the content online that are basically dishonest and misleading.
These laws are at par with European efforts to control damaging content online. These steps are due for implementation by the end of this year. However, the EU has stated they want stricter measures to curb disinformation. This is owed to certain claims by the Russia state media outlets during the war in Ukraine. The enforcement occurs as Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison faces the incoming federal election the following month.
“Digital platforms must take responsibility for what is on their sites and take action when harmful or misleading content appears,” Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said in a statement.
Most often, Australians would come across misinformation on larger platforms like Meta’s Facebook, and Twitter Inc. The report indicated how fake narratives usually started with posts that were very “emotive and engaging,” occurring within limited conspiracy teams. They were often intensified by international influencers, local public figures and media coverage.
The study also showcased how disinformation would also attack citizens in Australia. Meta’s Facebook had to remove as much as four disinformation campaigns in Australia between 2019 and 2020. Conspiracy groups visibly persuaded users to join smaller outlets, such as Telegram, that had looser policies regarding moderation. In case of these platform guidelines for industry-set content, ACMA pointed how they show a greater risk to the community. The Australian industry body, DIGI stated that they supported the recommendations. The body represents platforms like Google, TikTok, Twitter and Facebook, and had already established an organisation to focus on misinformation complaints.
