Activision Blizzard, the developers behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, has announced significant steps to tackle cheating in its popular competitive shooter. Since the launch of Ranked Play in Black Ops 6, the game has seen over 136,000 cheaters banned, according to a recent blog post by the developers. The rampant cheating in modes like Multiplayer (MP) and Warzone has been a consistent issue, frustrating players and disrupting the gaming experience.

“Instances of cheating, particularly in Ranked Play, severely impact our community,” the blog post states. “We’re committed to ensuring a fair and enjoyable experience and are rolling out new measures to fight back.”

Enhanced Detection Systems Target Cheaters and Boosting

Beyond the massive account bans, Activision has implemented cutting-edge updates to its detection models. A new cross-examination system flags accounts that regularly partied with known cheaters, addressing behaviors such as boosting and other manipulative practices.

This system ensures that cheaters can no longer evade consequences by simply moving to new accounts. Accounts flagged by these enhanced tools will undergo rigorous investigations to weed out malicious activity.

Combatting Malicious Reporting

To address another problem plaguing the community—malicious reporting—a new detection and warning system has been introduced. This system identifies when players file invalid or frivolous complaints, often out of frustration over losing games.

“Our system does not consider more than one report from a single player against another,” Activision clarifies, debunking claims made by cheat developers who promote software to spam reports. This proactive approach prevents misuse of the reporting system while maintaining its integrity.

Why IP Bans Are Not a Solution

Some players have called for harsher punishments, such as IP-based bans, to prevent cheaters from simply creating new accounts. However, Activision has reiterated that IP bans are not a viable solution due to potential collateral damage.

“IP bans often impact groups of users, such as college campuses or internet cafes, rather than targeting individual offenders,” the developers explained. This indiscriminate approach would penalize innocent players sharing the same network, undermining the fairness of the system.

New Anti-Cheat Measures Coming in 2025

Activision has teased an array of upcoming tools designed to bolster the game’s defense against cheaters:

  • Season 2 Updates: Improved client and server-side detection systems, a major kernel-level driver update to enhance driver security, and stronger encryption mechanisms.
  • Tampering Detection System: A new feature set to identify unauthorized modifications to game files or systems.
  • Season 3 Authentication System: A groundbreaking system aimed at authenticating legitimate players while targeting cheaters. Activision is keeping specific details under wraps to avoid giving cheat developers an advantage.

“These measures are designed to create a fairer experience, though the fight against cheaters remains an ongoing challenge,” the blog post notes.
