Google Unveils 'AI Mode' for Next-Gen Search

Tech giant Google unveiled its latest artificial intelligence innovations Tuesday, announcing the nationwide release of “AI Mode” for its search engine just months after beginning limited testing. The new feature represents another major step in Google’s aggressive push to transform how people find information online.

During its annual developers conference near Mountain View headquarters, Google executives revealed that AI Mode will now be available to all U.S. users, promising a more conversational search experience “like talking with an expert.”

“What all this progress means is that we are in a new phase of the AI platform shift, where decades of research are now becoming reality for people all over the world,” said Google CEO Sundar Pichai to a packed audience.

The company is also integrating its newest AI model, Gemini 2.5, into search algorithms and plans to test features that can automatically purchase concert tickets or conduct searches through live video feeds.

The Search Transformation of Google

Google’s transformation began about a year ago with the introduction of “AI overviews” conversational summaries that appear at the top of search results. These summaries have gained significant traction, with approximately 1.5 billion people regularly engaging with them. Users are now entering longer, more complex queries, signaling a fundamental shift in search behavior.

However, this AI-driven approach hasn’t been without consequences for the broader internet ecosystem. Search optimization firm BrightEdge reports that click-through rates from Google’s search results have declined by nearly 30% over the past year.

Their study attributes this decrease to users finding the AI overviews sufficient, reducing their need to visit other websites.

The rapid deployment of AI Mode after a relatively brief testing period demonstrates Google’s confidence that the technology won’t regularly produce misinformation. It also acknowledges growing competition from AI-powered alternatives like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

This competitive landscape has become a central theme in ongoing legal proceedings that could potentially force Google to restructure parts of its operations, following a federal judge’s ruling last year that declared its search engine an illegal monopoly.

Navigating Competition and Reshaping the Internet

Apple executive Eddy Cue recently testified that Google searches through Safari have been declining as users increasingly turn to AI alternatives. Google has cited this technological disruption as evidence that only minor changes to its business practices should be required, arguing that AI is already reshaping competition.

Despite these challenges, Google’s search engine maintains its dominance as the internet’s primary gateway. During the year ending in March, Google received 136 billion monthly visits 34 times more than ChatGPT’s 4 billion, according to data from onelittleweb.com.

Google’s upcoming experimental features signal its next wave of AI innovations. These include “Project Mariner,” which will test an AI agent’s ability to purchase tickets and make restaurant reservations, search through live video, and an opt-in option allowing AI access to users’ Gmail and other Google apps to learn more about their preferences.

Additional test features include “deep search” for complex topics and tools for producing graphical presentations of sports and financial data.

Google’s Tiered AI Access and Storage Expansion

For those who are willing to shell out for top-of-the-line levels of access to Google’s AI technology, the company introduced an “ultra” plan at $250 monthly with 30 terabytes of storage. That’s a significant improvement over the previous top-of-the-line level, now labeled “AI Pro” and priced at $20 monthly and two terabytes of storage.

In hardware, Google also previewed Android XR smart glasses with a voice-activated AI assistant and hands-free camera. These, co-designed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, represent Google’s return to a niche it abandoned after the Google Glass backlash 13 years ago.

The new glasses will compete with Meta and Ray-Ban’s in the same niche, but details on pricing and availability are not provided.

As Google presses forward with its AI revolution, the company’s own future and the wider internet terrain look set to undergo dramatic alteration.
