Hindenburg Research, the U.S.-based short-selling firm best known for its biting investigations into corporate fraud, said it was ceasing operations on 16 January 2025. Founded by Nathan Anderson in 2017, Hindenburg made international headlines primarily due to its report on the Adani Group, which had resulted in the conglomerate losing a whopping $150 billion in terms of market valuation.
In the personal statement announcing the disbanding, Anderson explained that this was a strategic decision rather than one that stemmed from pressure from outside or any health-related reasons.
Hindenburg Research Shuts Down
Hindenburg Research focuses on forensic financial analysis, including the detection of hidden fraud and malpractices in corporations. Their methodology involved intensive research and analyses of financial statements, management practices, and market behaviors. Their reports often led to significant drops in stock prices and prompted regulatory investigations into the targeted companies.
It also went after the Adani Group, most notably in January 2023. The Hindenburg accused this conglomerate of stock manipulation and accounting fraud that existed for decades.

This explosive report not only led to a tremendous sell-off in the Adani stocks but also provided a larger platform for discussing corporate governance and accountability in India. Although the Adani Group had an initial fallout, the group has repeatedly denied all accusations made against it and stated that all claims were baseless and misleading.
He said the reason for the shutdown of Hindenburg Research was not due to any singular event or crisis but a culmination of personal reflections and strategic planning.
He stated, “There is not one specific thing—no particular threat, no health issue, and no big personal issue” driving this decision. Instead, it was about stepping back from the intensity of his work to focus on other aspects of life.
Hindenburg’s Founder to Open-Source Investigative Techniques
Anderson recalled his experience with Hindenburg, where he described how the firm started with very little funding and how he soon became involved in a series of lawsuits shortly after the firm was launched. Despite all these challenges, Anderson said he is thankful for the support from his team and followers throughout the journey of Hindenburg.
Anderson has also planned to open-source the techniques used in investigating that made Hindenburg successful. For the next six months, he will prepare educational materials and videos that detail the methodologies and hopes to inspire others working in the area of investigative research. He said that he wanted to enable those people who were keen to uncover fraud and make corporate practices transparent.
The closure of Hindenburg Research marks a very important moment in the landscape of corporate accountability and short-selling practices. The firm’s investigations led to numerous regulatory actions against various companies and individuals. According to Anderson, nearly 100 individuals have faced civil or criminal charges as a result of their work at Hindenburg.
The End of Hindenburg, the Rise of Scrutiny
The firm itself came under scanner as well; in June 2024, India’s Securities and Exchange Board issued a show-cause notice to Hindenburg and others for allegedly colluding to use non-public information against the Adani Group.
This backdrop of regulatory challenges highlights the contentious nature of short-selling as a practice and raises questions about its future amid increasing scrutiny from regulators worldwide.
The disbandment of Hindenburg Research concludes one chapter but opens another. It ends a chapter for Anderson and his team but also opens the doors to many more interested people in forensic financial analysis.
Anderson hopes that publicizing his research techniques will encourage a new generation of researchers dedicated to transparency and accountability in business practices. The legacy of Hindenburg Research is likely to continue to reverberate within the discussions corporate America is currently having with issues of integrity and ethics for many years to come.
