What is SOS on an iPhone?

When you see SOS or SOS Only appear in your iPhone’s status bar, it means your phone can’t find its way onto your carrier’s network. Or, in other words, we can say your phone is unable to access the network through the network carrier. Whether you’re in that zone, your SIM card doesn’t really work, and all you can do is make emergency calls. However, your phone isn’t totally offline, which is a silver lining in this case. By law, iPhones are designed to “borrow” other available networks to reach emergency services. You can dial 911 or an emergency contact if your phone permits it in that mode.

Steps to get out of the SOS mode on an iPhone

If your phone has gone into the SOS mode, here is how you can fix it.

Go to The Airplane Mode Toggle

This is the first place a mind would go to! If you think so too, just swipe down from the top-right to open your Control Center. Tap on the Airplane icon, wait about 15 seconds, and tap on it again. This forces your phone to reconnect to the nearest cell tower and stop the SOS mode altogether.

Force a Restart

If that thing doesn’t work out, you’ve got other ways. If a regular restart doesn’t work, do a reset. Quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side Power Button until the Apple logo pops up on the screen.

Check Cellular Settings

To fix it at the root, you can also go to Settings > Cellular and make sure your “Cellular Data” is toggled on. If you are traveling, tap on Cellular Data Options and make sure that your Data Roaming is enabled. If not, try to do that every time so that this problem doesn’t occur.

Update The Carrier Settings

You can also look further into the settings, and to connect to Wi-Fi, go to Settings > General > About, and wait for 30 seconds. If a carrier update is pending, a prompt will appear to install it immediately.

Reset Your SIM

If you have a physical SIM card and feel that it may be causing this to happen, you can pop the tray out and put it back in. Sometimes a tiny shift of the SIM card in the tray causes the SOS error.

Try any and all of these methods if need be, and fix the problem. It is fixable, so don’t sweat it! It will be alright with a few right moves.
